Episode #6: Special Guest Interview with HPS School Board President, Ken Hall

We had the opportunity to host and interview Hudsonville Public Schools Board President, Ken Hall, in our classroom!  January is Board Member Appreciation Month and we wanted to invite him in to see and experience life in our building!  Students welcomed him, asked questions, gave him a tour of the building. On the tour students highlighted special areas, events, and memories that were important to them as they led him around the school visiting several classrooms where learning was taking place.  Lastly, a small team of students, Cal, Morgan, & Alison, developed questions and conducted a podcast interview which you are about to hear! They wanted to him to share a little about his role, find out about how reading plays a role in his life, and get advice about how to develop a growth mindset.   We want to thank Mr. Hall for taking the time to join and share with us today, as well as his role in helping make Hudsonville Public Schools a great place to learn! Also, many thanks to the other board members who serve alongside Mr. Hall who work as a team to represent the tax payers of Hudsonville and make this an extraordinary community.

Episode #5: Refugees, Wax Thieves, and a Dog Named Rain (Reign)!

This week on Episode #5 we have Deacon sharing an exciting and suspenseful American Chillers book, Washington Wax Museum by Johnathan Rand. Also, Sydnee explored the world of Rose Howard, a homophone-enthusiast in Rain, Reign, by Ann M. Martin.  Lastly, we have Owen who dove into three, incredible stories about refugees in Alan Gratz's, Refugee.  Join us for another episode where we share what we've been reading!

Episode #4: Growth Mindset Matters

Having a growth mindset is helpful when we encounter struggles, challenges, or even failures. On this episode, we break from our book talks to chat with Tyler, Kendall, and Tessa about recapping what they've learned from their interviews with family members.  In the last couple of weeks, we set out to learn from adults around us by interviewing them about times where they've failed, been challenged, or encountered struggles.  In that conversation, the hope was that students can learn from the perseverance and stick-to-it-iveness that their interviewees had to go through before experiencing success.  Join us for our recap of what they've learned and how we all can apply others' experiences to our own journeys!

Episode 3: Wizards, Werewolves, and a Dog Named Oogy: The Magic of Belonging

Addison, Teegan, and Caleb share out about books they've been reading.  Addison starts off with the initial journey of Harry Potter in Harry Potter and Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling.  Teegan shares the story of the lovable rescue dog in, Oogy, by Larry Levin.  Last up, Caleb relays his love of spooky adventures with Johnathan Rand's, American Chillers: Wisconsin Werewolves. Today we're talking about some books that have big feelings and emotions in them.  Araya will share about I Survived the Joplin Tornado, 2011, by Lauren Tarshis. Morgan will share the powerful story, Out of My Mind, by Sharon M. Draper.  Cal will share the timeless, The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate.
