The Coaching Experiment
I made the mistake of thinking that I could emulate one of my all-time favourite coaches. I thought that by using his method I would help my guest have an insight. What happened was that instead of putting all my attention on my guest, I was caught up in my head. I was trying to remember what and how he interviewed his own guests instead of remaining loyal to my own way of asking questions and coaching anyone. The result wasn't a bad one but I am sure it could have been that much more powerful if my attention was focused on her rather than on how I was going to do a great job. This was a huge lesson for two reasons, one I cannot make my guest have an insight. Its not up to me, I can only point to what I see. Whether a person has an insight or not is not up to the coach. That thought alone does all the heavy lifting. Secondly, to learn to trust and be comfortable with the way I do things, there is no right or wrong way. There is only your way, remain loyal to that and learn along the way. If needs be course correct but do it your way. I invite you to listen to Carin's story and the many challenges she encountered throughout her life. She is living proof that resilience is innate and we find that out when we hit rock bottom.
