Descripción

In October 1956, Hungary erupted in a spontaneous uprising against Soviet domination. Inspired by Khrushchev's de-Stalinization speech, students and workers took to the streets of Budapest, demanding reform and the withdrawal of Soviet troops. The revolution installed a new government led by Imre Nagy, a reformist communist who had been purged years earlier. Nagy announced Hungary's withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact and declared neutrality. But Moscow was watching. After initial hesitation, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev ordered a massive military intervention. On November 4, Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest, crushing the revolution in days. Over 2,500 Hungarians were killed, and 200,000 fled as refugees. Nagy was later executed. This episode explores the key figures — Imre Nagy, János Kádár, and the Soviet envoy Yuri Andropov — and the pivotal moments at the Corvin Passage and outside the Parliament building. It also examines how the West, distracted by the Suez Crisis, offered no help, and how the brutal crackdown reshaped the Cold War's trajectory in Eastern Europe. #HungarianRevolution #1956 #Budapest #SovietUnion #ColdWar #ImreNagy #JanosKadar #WarsawPact #DeStalinization #CorvinPassage #SuezCrisis #NikitaKhrushchev #YuriAndropov #RadioFreeEurope #Hungary #Revolt #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]

The 1958 Iraqi Revolution: A Bloody Turning Point in the Cold War Middle East

In July 1958, a sudden coup in Baghdad toppled the Hashemite monarchy and shocked the Western world. In this episode, we explore the 14 July Revolution — the secret Free Officers conspiracy, the brutal assassination of King Faisal II and his family, and the rise of General Abd al-Karim Qasim. We examine how the Eisenhower administration reacted with military deployments to Lebanon and Jordan under the Eisenhower Doctrine, and how Qasim's balancing act between pan-Arab nationalists, Iraqi communists, and oil interests destabilised the region for decades. We also discuss the often-overlooked role of Colonel Abd al-Salam Arif, the rivalry with Nasser's United Arab Republic, and the consequences for Kurdish and Shi'a communities. This episode covers a pivotal moment when Cold War superpowers jostled for influence over Iraq's oil wealth and strategic position, setting the stage for decades of upheaval. #IraqiRevolution #14JulyRevolution #AbdAlKarimQasim #KingFaisalII #EisenhowerDoctrine #BaghdadPact #FreeOfficers #NuriAlSaid #ColdWar #UnitedArabRepublic #GamalAbdelNasser #OperationBlueBat #Iraq #MiddleEast #1958 #History #FexingoHistory #Coup Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]

The 1964 Brazilian Coup and the Rise of Military Rule

In 1964, Brazil's democratically elected president João Goulart was overthrown in a military coup that plunged the country into 21 years of authoritarian rule. This episode explores the complex web of domestic tensions and Cold War geopolitics that led to the coup. We discuss Goulart's left-leaning reforms, the U.S. role through Operation Brother Sam, the CIA's backing of opposition governors, and the cast of key figures—from General Humberto Castelo Branco to Carlos Lacerda. We also examine the U.S. ambassador Lincoln Gordon's secret cables, the role of the Institute for Research and Social Studies (IPES), and the aftermath of the coup. The episode draws on declassified documents and oral histories to reveal how fear of communism, combined with economic crisis and political polarization, paved the way for military intervention that would reshape Brazil for decades. #BrazilianCoup1964 #JoãoGoulart #OperationBrotherSam #CasteloBranco #LincolnGordon #IPES #CIA #ColdWar #Brazil #MilitaryDictatorship #CarlosLacerda #USForeignPolicy #1964 #History #FexingoHistory #LatinAmerica #Coups #ColdWarHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]

The 1955 Bandung Conference: Cold War's Third World Gambit

In April 1955, twenty-nine newly independent Asian and African nations met in Bandung, Indonesia, for a conference that reshaped Cold War geopolitics. This episode explores how leaders like Indonesia's Sukarno, India's Jawaharlal Nehru, China's Zhou Enlai, Egypt's Gamal Abdel Nasser, and the Philippines' Carlos P. Romulo navigated pressures from the US and Soviet blocs. We dive into the debates over non-alignment, the birth of the Non-Aligned Movement, Zhou's unexpected charm offensive that won over Southeast Asian delegates, and the conference's legacy in shaping postcolonial solidarity. Also covered: the Afro-Asian bloc's struggle with competing national interests, the influence of the 1954 Geneva Conference, and how Bandung laid groundwork for later conflicts in Vietnam, Algeria, and the Congo.
