The Golden Thread
In 451 CE, the largest council in Christian history assembled at Chalcedon to answer a question that had been tearing the church apart for decades. At the center of it was a woman --- Aelia Pulcheria, Eastern Roman empress, consecrated virgin, and one of the most formidable figures of the ancient world. Harmonia traces Pulcheria's remarkable life, from the fifteen-year-old regent who took the reins of an empire, to the empress who convened the Council of Chalcedon and helped define the nature of Christ for fifteen centuries of Christian worship. Along the way, she invites us to consider something quietly profound --- that the faith billions carry today was not handed down from heaven fully formed, but worked out by human hands, in human rooms, by people who were faithful and fallible and utterly determined to get it right.
