10. Reaper Drone Pilot on Experiences, PTSD and Building Remote Warriors Community
In this episode, I'm sitting down with Tanner “Blackjack” Yackley, a former U.S. Air Force MQ-9 Reaper Sensor Operator and Evaluator with a decade of operational experience. He is the founder of Remote Warrior LLC, a veteran-led initiative dedicated to supporting Remote Combat Warriors — the pilots, sensor operators, analysts, and cyber operators engaged in modern warfare — through trauma-informed resources, advocacy, and innovation.Tanner is also pursuing a PhD in Psychology, where his research focuses on Complex PTSD (CPTSD), moral injury, and the mental health of drone and remote warfare personnel. He has authored multiple guides and white papers on trauma, transition, and occupational stress, and is the creator of The Reaper’s Shadow: Mental Health in the Drone Age, which blends personal narrative with advocacy for systemic change.Through Remote Warrior, Tanner has built a comprehensive ecosystem of tools, including a 10-part guide library, the RECON trauma screen, the Fog of War CPTSD Guide, and practical innovations like the Panic Pack and Smart Home Fortress. His work has been featured in Business Insider and other outlets, and he regularly engages with policymakers, clinicians, and veteran organizations to improve recognition and care for those serving in unseen combat roles.
