The Human Side of Travel
In this episode, we travel to the sun-drenched coast of Spain, where the promise of a "Second Berlin" art scene in Malaga leads one Dutch artist into a complex web of spiritual and psychological control. When Dutch artist Els meets Rodolfo, a brilliant and charismatic Cuban printmaker, she is drawn into a world of ancient tradition and avant-garde creativity. As a self-proclaimed Hijo de Oduduwa, Rodolfo positions himself as a divine medium, a role he uses to justify a deepening addiction to rum and a toxic, shifting reality. What begins as an artistic "purity of the mix" slowly unravels into a textbook study of the narcissist at work. From a silkscreen studio to the haunting sight of a mentor lost to alcoholism on the street to a waterfront warehouse turned art studio, Els must navigate the fine line between cultural immersion and personal erasure. Now based in Valencia, Els shares how she dismantled a relationship built on spiritual manipulation to reclaim her own craft.
