The Hunter and Hippie
Pat and I sat down before the performances of Sarah Buxton & Rivers Rutherford during The Art of Song in Deadwood this month. We discussed so many things; among the few were Songwriting, Divorce, Faith, and Doing Hard ThingsSinger-songwriter, Sarah shares early musical influences, choir experiences, her first performance at 16, and how journaling and songwriting helped her process major life changes, including writing “Hard Things” in 2020 just before separating from her husband of 11 years. She recounts her first major cut that Keith Urban released called “Stupid Boy,” and discusses the realities of co-writing, rejection, habits for resilience, and gender dynamics in a male-dominated industry. Songwriter, Danny Myrick briefly joins to discuss the value of female perspectives in writing and the Headliner, Rivers Rutherford shares his Memphis upbringing, early songwriting, a first cut recorded by The Highwaymen, harsh financial realities, and how faith and his wife’s support kept him going, ending with advice to his 17-year-old self about trust and taking time.
