You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

In this episode, I reflect on a situation that occurred during a football game I coached, where some players were called “dirty” or “foul” for playing tough. I discuss how inner-city children, who grow up in challenging environments, often express that struggle through physical play. This doesn’t make them dirty—it’s a reflection of their resilience and the need to mature faster than their peers. I also dive into how people from more stable environments might misunderstand this, thinking their way is the only way, when in reality, these kids are adapting to the circumstances they were dealt.

However, with that attention has come a wave of negativity from external sources—racial tension, verbal abuse, and divisiveness from certain fan groups. These distractions have taken away from the hard work and dedication of the athletes who are pushing the game forward. This episode is a heartfelt plea to keep sports focused on what truly matters: the love of the game. It’s time to move beyond the noise, leave race and division out of the conversation, and celebrate the incredible achievements of these athletes.
