The Lakefly Radio Hour (also referred to as the Lakefly WritersHour) is a literary podcast hosted by Dr. Bill Gillard and Thomas Cannon (the inaugural Poet Laureate of Oshkosh). The show serves as a community hub for "ink slingers and page-turners," focusing on the craft of writing and the vibrant literary scene in and around Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This lively interview with Michael J Cooney takes us all around Wisconsin with his new book "Wisconsin Man Art. A local Oshkosh author and photographer, Cooney takes us on a visual survey of 20th and 21st-century art environments created by untrained male artists across the state. From yard art to visionary constructions, this work highlights the imaginative power of "outsider art" produced entirely outside institutional contexts. We learn that The Kohler foundation supports the preservation of these works of art once the artist passes. We also discuss how Mel Schettl, of M. Schettl Sales is also instrumental in making sure these unique treasures do not just fade away. M. Schettl Sales is a fixture of the Oshkosh Area and has acres of wonderful "roadside attractions" to behold.Inside the Book:Diverse Art Forms: Discover examples of Art Brut, Vernacular Art, Naive Art, and Yard Art found in 26 different Wisconsin counties.44 Featured Artists: The book includes detailed biographies and personal statements from 44 self-taught artists, offering a rare look at the stories behind their massive creations.Regional Heritage: Learn how these unique environments contribute to American folk art, material culture, and the state's historical landscape. The book is available for purchase by the author and at Caramel Crisp Corner in Oshkosh.
