Vision is often talked about in leadership — but far less often do leaders get to see what happens when a vision becomes real. In this episode of the Leadership Upgrade Podcast, I’m joined by Chris Adams, former CEO of the City of Karratha, to explore how a clear, shared vision helped transform Karratha from a transient mining town into what is now recognised as Australia’s most liveable regional community. Chris reflects on his own leadership journey — including starting out as a self-described vision sceptic — and unpacks how vision moved beyond strategy documents to become a lived, community-wide force for change. We explore how vision is often born from dissatisfaction with the status quo, why it must extend beyond the four walls of an organisation, and how it creates momentum long before there is tangible evidence of success. One of the most powerful measures of Karratha’s transformation was a simple but revealing question asked in an annual community survey: How long do you intend to stay in the community? Over time, the answers told a compelling story about belonging, belief, and the real-world impact of vision when people can genuinely see a future for themselves. This conversation is especially relevant for leaders in local government, business, and community organisations who are grappling with complexity, constraint, and competing priorities — and who want to understand how vision can move from aspiration to action. In this episode, we discuss: - Why vision often emerges from agitation rather than comfort - How leaders can imagine a preferred future beyond current limitations - Why vision must be shared with partners, stakeholders, and the wider community - How Karratha measured the impact of vision in a tangible, human way - What leaders can learn from seeing vision play out over time, at scale This is a grounded, practical conversation about leadership, courage, and possibility — from someone who has seen vision work powerfully in the real world. Thriving In Your First 90 Days

🎧 Your First 90 Days — How New Leaders Build Trust & Understanding, Not Just Results In this episode of Leadership Upgrade, host Steve Mac sits down with leadership coach Michael Rowell and Belinda Walker, HR Operations Program Leader at Logan City Council, to unpack what really defines success in your first 90 days as a leader. From navigating complex systems to motivating teams, they reveal what leaders should focus on when the title is new and the expectations are high. Belinda introduces the “Skill, Will, and Hill” model and shares why the best leaders focus less on proving themselves and more on listening, learning, and removing barriers for their teams. 💡 You’ll learn how to: • Build credibility in your first 90 days. • Strengthen relationships before chasing results. • Understand your team’s context, strengths, and “hills.” • Ask smart questions early to earn trust. • Lead through influence, not authority. If you’re stepping into a new leadership role — or mentoring someone who is — this conversation will help you build belonging, clarity, and confidence from day one.
