The Loud Lens: Photography's Middle Finger
Over three thousand photographs of women. Taken without their knowledge. Without their consent. Some of them upskirt shots. Started, by his own admission, as a joke to share with mates on WhatsApp. Then a curator got involved. And a publisher. And Rolling Stone. And a prestigious Milan gallery. And suddenly it was art. This week, Italian photographer Ray Banhoff resurfaced to talk proudly about Fie, a project he made between 2012 and 2015 (approx). And the internet caught up with what was actually in those photographs. But this episode isn't a pile-on. Because if we focus only on the man, we let the system off the hook. And the system is where the real story is. Who decides what's art? Who gets handed the keys to legitimacy, and why? What does it say about our industry that the same photographs found on a stranger's phone would have us calling the police, but put in a gallery get a glowing write-up? That's what we're getting into today.
