Descripción

Today I have a very pleasant and sometimes a bit emotional conversation with Clare Murray (@claremurray1973). Clare lives with MODY 3. We discuss everything from diagnosis back in 1996, how her management changed, pregnancy on insulin, the genetic testing of both her children and so much more. Clare has consulted with last week's guest professor Maggie Shepherd, defenitely check that episode for more information on genetics or go to www.diabetesgenes.org  Clare also mentioned another person with MODY 3, Kylie. She's to my knowledge one of the first MODY advocates on instagram and provides well researched information about MODY and other types of diabetes with a sparkle and a smile and lots of humour. Definitely give her a follow @mylifewithmody Please reach out if you have any questions for me or Clare. Easiest way to do so is to DM me over at Instagram @insulin.in.my.backpack or through my website www.modyandme.com  Enjoy this episode. Love, Jessie

Meeting my soul sister (part 1)

Today I have the pleasure to finally sit down and talk with Jennifer. We have been chatting for almost 2 years now and I feel we have a lot in common. In fact, this conversation nearly lasted 2 hours! Time flies when you are so engaged in a valuable conversation.  I feel we should all make more time for that in our lives. To keep this episode to a 'normal' length I decided to devide it into 2 parts. This is part 1. Jennifer was diagnosed with MODY 5 about 4 years ago but has lived with the symptoms her whole life. Today we focus mainly on the diabetes part and how she finally managed to get a diagnoses, mainly because of her own determination to find answers. She refers to the MODY fb group, you find this page here:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/134389319961461  For some more info about MODY 5, take a look at:  https://www.diabetesgenes.org/what-is-mody/hnf1b-mody-rcad/ Jennifer is on Instagram @mody5jenn and her lovely companion is @travelerbug If you would like to have a look at the delicious food Jennifer cooks, go to www.atasteforspice.com  Don't forget to take a look at her amazing cookbook 'Finding flavor'. It's available as E-book or hard copy! Or if you are looking for beautifully handcrafted jewelry by Jennifer, look at www. padovajewelry.com

episode Diabetes genes with professor Maggie Shepherd. artwork

Diabetes genes with professor Maggie Shepherd.

Today I may proudly present our first guest from the research and clinical field, the honoured professor Maggie Shepherd from Exeter University (UK).  We have the priviledge to dive into her personal journey into becoming a professor specialised in monogenetic diabetes. She explains in a very clear and easy to understand manner what monogenetic diabetes is, how research is conducted and how these discoveries can change the lives of so many people living with diabetes. She is a very invested clinician too and has set up some amazing projects all over the UK to raise more awareness for monogenetic diabetes and to help educate health care professionals about monogenetic diabetes. For example, in every hospital in the UK there will be at least one diabetes consultant and one diabetes nurse who are trained in monogenetic diabetes. During the conversation we discuss things like the MODY calculator, virtual education videos, the Exeter diabetes app and the diabetes genes website.
