Welcome to The MotherPod! A podcast from the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation, designed by moms, for moms, to create conversations focused on staying healthy through the journey of motherhood. For complete episodes and more on The MotherPod, find us online: wwhf.org/motherpod Episode 12 Outreach Manager, Chelsea Tibbetts, recently had the privilege of interviewing Wendy Kalberg, Principal Investigator/Clinical Research Associate with the Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, & Addiction at the University of New Mexico, to discuss the landscape of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Wendy is the co-author of a research article entitled, “Prevalence of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in 4 US Communities” that was published in JAMA in February of this year. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are a group of conditions, including abnormal facial features, low body weight, hyperactive behavior, difficulty with attention/learning, and even problems with heart, kidneys, or bones, that can occur as the result of a mother drinking alcohol during pregnancy. WWHF’s My Baby & Me program works to help women achieve alcohol-free pregnancies, and our interview with Wendy Kalberg will serve as a continuing education opportunity and research discussion for My Baby & Me providers. The interview also invites general conversation about the stigma of alcohol consumption and how we can work to prevent FASD in our state.

Hear from former NCIS agent, Heather Ryan, as we discuss what cyber threats kids and parents are under and what tools parents can use to protect their kids. Heather Ryan is a mom of 2 and former NCIS agent. During that time she served in five different duty stations and traveled the world investigating felonies ranging from sexual assault and narcotics to homicide and espionage. As an interrogator and hostage negotiator Heather learned first hand how the criminal mind operates and how the bad guys choose their victims. After years as a field agent, Heather became a Supervisory Special Agent managing a team of agents covering a ten state area of responsibility.
