Her academic interests include the neurophysiology of emotion, heart rate variability, which is a well studied marker of nervous system flexibility and resilience, and the impact of meditative states on autonomic regulation. She explores the interface between measurable physiological coherence and subjective experiences of calm, empathy, and presence. Dr. Friend’s work contributes to the growing dialogue between medicine, psychology, and contemplative neuroscience, bringing the science and wisdom of the heart into clinical and professional well-being. She is the author of three books: The Greatness Chair, The Greatness Chair Solutions: A Guidebook to Successful Parenting and Teaching, and Sarah in the Greatness Chair.
