Restorative Justice: A Sheriff's View

As it’s Restorative Justice Week, we sat down with retired sheriff and Sacro Board Member, David Mackie. Through his work as a Sheriff, David developed a belief in the power of redemption and applied compassion and understanding of both the victims and perpetrators of crime to his personal judicial practice. So what are his views and experiences of restorative justice? David was in private practice as a Solicitor and an Advocate for 25 years before being appointed a Sheriff in 2001. For 15 years until his retirement from the Bench in 2019, he sat as the resident Sheriff in Alloa Sheriff Court.  David is a Board member at Sacro and several other charities and has been advising the government on the reform of the Children’s Hearings System as chair of the working group.
