The Safavid Empire: Persia's Return to Greatness — Fexingo History
Before Shah Ismail I founded the Safavid Empire, before he rode into Tabriz at the head of the Qizilbash, he wrote poetry. Under the pen name Khatai, the teenage warrior-saint composed ecstatic, violent, and deeply heretical verses in Azerbaijani Turkish that blended Shiite devotion with extremist Sufi claims of divinity. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the surviving poems of Khatai — how they functioned as propaganda, liturgy, and personal confession for the Qizilbash. They examine specific lines that proclaimed Ismail the living God, the Mahdi, and the embodiment of Ali, and discuss how these poems were recited in battle, carved into architecture, and later suppressed by the very dynasty they helped create. The conversation also considers the tension between the historical Ismail and the mythic Khatai, and what the poems reveal about the emotional and spiritual core of early Safavid power. #ShahIsmailI #Khatai #SafavidPoetry #Qizilbash #Sufi #TwelverShiism #AzerbaijaniTurkish #Mahdi #Murshid-e-Kamil #Chaldiran #Ardabil #PersianHistory #MiddleEastHistory #IslamicHistory #EarlyModern #PoetryAndPropaganda #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]
