Ep 40 : Navigating cyclones, night crossings, and sea-based relationships with Julia Heubeck

Julia and her family are currently in Thailand awaiting a flight to Cyprus to reconnect with their catamaran “Numa” as she is skippered across from Ko Lanta to Europe. We’ve known Julia for a few years in London, where she’s often joined us for Soulwalks in Richmond Park, for coffee and conversation, and it’s this foundation of sharing intimate experiences which leads us to re-connect across the airwaves. As you’ll hear, they left their London Richmond life, to take on a new venture and way of living on the sea, and exploring many parts of the world. Now after almost a year, they’ve travelled the Gulf of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, big tourist spots like Phuket and Krabi as well as tiny island and communities. What have they learnt? Together we jump right in to understand the drivers, but also the complexities of life at sea. The considerations, starting with how to keep themselves safe. Ep 39: Embracing Uncertainty with Carmen & Andrew

It can be an incredibly painful philosophical pill to swallow and believe that life is actually, despite appearances, happen for and through us. But if you are able and willing to reflect a little…it is a pill of empowerment. An opportunity to find, appreciate and utilise the positives from any situation. Even if it is just to know more accurately what it is we don’t prefer as apposed to what we do prefer. For every day is “Judgment Day” and never before in human history have we been so acutely aware of the scope and depth of human potential for “good and evil”. We are going through foretold apocalyptic times where everything is being revealed and nothing can be hidden for long. So it is on both a global and individual level we are being squeezed to reveal what we are truly made of. A great purge of toxicity coming to the surface to be faced and healed. A strong invitation to reflect and act upon who we truly are and what we truly love, value and trust when gentle push comes to aggressive shove. We too are facing of our own strong squeeze or invitation. Early February we were served a letter of unaffordable rent increase or 2 month ‘break-clause’ to leave our home. We decided that it was our own Universal Letter, to choose a path that in all honesty we’d been discussing and toying with for a long while. A path of travel, adventure and the search for our own real home. We love much of our life. The people in it, the work we do, time with family and friends and everything we’ve created here over the last 20-50 years. It’s not a case of ‘this is wrong’ - move, but more a, something isn’t quite flowing and we are being called elsewhere. We have an abundance of skills, experience, love and connections, however for some reason finances have been incredibly challenging since the pandemic and we have not quite find our true alignment and flow. Therefore, with our quest for adventure, for beauty, for diversity, we are heading off on our own adventure. In a way it is not the start of our adventure but just the next chapter of us practicing finding our joyful moment to moment momentum. Our rough dream is to take ‘Soulhub on Tour’ and create ‘Restoration Hubs’ around the world for those who feel overwhelmed by the world, to come and find rest and restoration with us. As yet we are unsure of where the wind will take us…but we hope that you will follow our journey and perhaps be inspired to invite a little adventure into your own lives. Ep 38: Finding and funding human empowerment through tech with William McCoy.

Welcome to episode 38. Today’s guest is William McCoy, an American tech entrepreneur who has spent over 17 years leading business ventures in real estate, fintech, app development and clean energy. He also supports Fortune 500 clients in enterprise software and hardware services, through scaling global Electric Vehicles and solar energy operations. William’s most recent business called Kurudy which means Return in Swahili. It is a reward based crowd funding platform using the power of regtech, fintech, and AI. One that aims to raise capital, align incentives, protect backers, and empower creators specifically in Africa. We were randomly connected to William by a rather clever little bit of tech...that normally we would ignore but for some reason on this occasion we didn’t. And as result Carmen and I landed up having a really interesting conversation with William that would have made a great podcast. So we came back to hopefully create and capture another exciting and enlightening conversation about empowerment, community and how tech and humans can harmoniously co-exist. As you know Carmen and I are by no means global economic specialists however we did our best to discuss how people all around the world are trying to survive and how different cultures face different challenges. We also touch on many other universal topics such as therapy, parenthood, strength through diversity. We apologise the sound quality is not great on this episode, but there are some great nuggets of insight within the story. William stressed how black Americans have to go way above and beyond their white counterparts efforts in order to succeed. And how this need to be overly strong is sometimes a block to discussing mental health issues and can often mean they walk away from big projects. We discussed the importance of both countries, and individuals, becoming self reliant rather than being beholden to global powers and employers. As global powers benefit from keeping developing countries poor so that they can be exploited for cheap labour and minerals. “But I’ve been like this as a little kid. I’ve sold everything from candy to shovelling snow to cutting grass. I’ve always been. We didn’t have very much money. I wanted things.
