(source: amazon.com) SOME QUESTIONS WE ASK: * When she hears the word “successful,” who’s the first person that comes to mind and why? * What are the common themes that she’s learned from her interviews, from the people, the adversity stories and how they’ve overcome them? * To find your purpose or really understanding your purpose, does one have to understand themselves on a deep level? Like who you are as a person, what your core values are? Is that part and parcel of figuring out your purpose and moving forward? * When we have a reason, something bigger than ourselves, something that transcends our specific situation, it’s huge in helping us cope and it’s huge in helping us move on. * He who has a why to live can bear almost any how. – Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche * In her work, when somebody comes to her and they’re struggling with or they’re dealing with the adversities in their lives. What are some of the things in her curriculum that she’s trying to teach them or open them up to? * It’s not really about the circumstance that defines what kind of a life you live, whether it be happy or rich, or not… It’s more how we respond to our circumstance. * What are some of the activities or exercises that she can recommend to somebody who’s dealing with adversity and trying to respond it in a positive way? * What has she seen as far as the impact on the community and the relationships around her in using adversity to your advantage? Are there other parts to this with regard to community, the right community around you? * How we label and define ourselves. Are we limiting ourselves by our own label? Or are we expanding ourselves by saying, yes, I have this label, AND… * No matter what problems and disabilities there are in people, there is a core, and everyone has strength. And it behooves us to dig for those and find them. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: * Harriett’s background, what she considers her first real adversity and what pointed her in the direction of her life theme * The powerful shift that helped her create her Parenting Mission Statement * Why she started her blog and how it led to her book * No one gets through this life unscathed, we all have stuff come at us. The key is not so much how do we avoid, but what do we do when it does hit us. * Freeing ourselves from victim mentality * You can’t change what happened, you can only change how you respond to what happened. And that has to be intentional and choice-driven. * Of parenting and resilience: * Our kids are not growing into resilient people and they’re not learning coping skills. * When we don’t teach coping skills, when we keep running in to save and protect and disallow from those negative feelings, we’re not giving them anything to deal with future adversity. * One action step that somebody could take tomorrow to start getting on the right path LINKS: Harriet’s website: http://Rebuildlifenow.com [http://rebuildlifenow.com] Harriet’s book: Living Well Despite Adversity [https://www.amazon.com/Living-Well-Despite-Adversity-Inspiration/dp/0692859012] Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl [https://www.amazon.com/Mans-Search-Meaning-Viktor-Frankl/dp/080701429X] Social Psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky’s pie of happiness [https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/one-among-many/201503/happy-pie] Martin Seligman [https://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/faculty-profile/profile-dr-martin-seligman]: WWW – What’s working well?
