INTERSECTIONALITY: THE TRANSGENDER CONVERSATION

In this episode of The Unspoken Truth, we turn the spotlight on the transgender community in Ghana, a group whose voices are too often silenced or overlooked. Trans people in Ghana face a web of intersecting challenges—from social stigma and discrimination to barriers in healthcare, education, and employment—that deeply shape their everyday lives. Through intimate, first-hand accounts, we hear how these obstacles alter their journeys, influence their choices, and impact the way they navigate a society that frequently denies them recognition and dignity. Yet, within these stories also lie strength, resilience, and an unyielding will to exist authentically. This conversation goes beyond headlines and stereotypes, offering listeners a rare and honest glimpse into the lived experiences of Ghana’s trans community—an invitation to listen, reflect, and reckon with truths that remain unspoken. Educational Access For Queer Youth In Ghana

Education is a fundamental human right and a critical pathway to personal development and economic empowerment. However, queer youths in Ghana face significant barriers in accessing quality education due to discrimination, stigma, and legal restrictions. The socio-cultural environment, compounded by the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2021,exacerbates marginalization, leading to high dropout rates, mental health challenges, and limited opportunities for academic and professional advancement. Ghana, as a signatory to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is committed to ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education (SDG 4). Yet, the exclusion and discrimination faced by Queer youth contradict this commitment. Addressing these barriers is crucial to fostering an inclusive education system that upholds human rights and equal opportunities for all. Young queer students in Ghana experience systemic discrimination, including bullying, exclusion from educational institutions, and lack of support services. Fear of exposure and violence forces many to abandon their education, limiting their prospects and deepening economic inequality. The absence of inclusive policies further isolates queer youth from educational resources, restricting their ability to contribute meaningfully to national development. In this episode we sit with experts, activists, and individuals with lived experiences, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives This Episode was Powered by Power of Pride Host:Gyasi Nimako Producer:Quame Theme Song: "SPEAK" A Youth Alliance for Equality Foundation Production.
