What do you do when life hands you a situation that makes your blood boil? Whether it’s an infuriating insurance denial, a system that feels broken, or just the everyday friction of a world that feels increasingly activated—the "fire" is often inevitable. But in yoga, the goal isn't to become a fire extinguisher; it’s to learn how to be a skillful "strainer" for that heat. In today’s episode, Heidi shares a raw, personal story about navigating the complex healthcare system following her son’s first open-heart surgery. It’s a conversation that started in the studio lobby and turned into a powerful lesson on Yoga Sutra 2.46: Sthira Sukham Asanam. We often think "ease" means being soft or passive, but the true translation suggests something much more resilient: the ability to remain fluid and steady even when the intensity is turned all the way up. In this episode, we explore: * The "Anesthesia Formulary" Frustration: How a real-life crisis became the catalyst for a deeper practice of regulation. * Redefining Sukham: Why "ease" is actually about movement without friction (the "good axle" metaphor). * Regulation vs. Escape: Why yoga isn't about bypassing difficult emotions, but learning to stay connected to yourself while they move through you. * The "Windows Open" Moment: Using physical heat in the body to practice cooling the nervous system in real-time. * The Revolved Half Moon Challenge: Why attacking a difficult pose with force usually leads to a fall, and how "matching effort with softening" is the key to stability both on and off the mat. Whether you are navigating a stressful season or just trying to keep your cool in a heated world, this episode offers practical tools for staying steady inside the intensity. Ep114 | What If You Trusted What You Already Know?

What happens when something that once made sense no longer feels aligned? In this episode of Theme Weavers, Heidi shares the unexpected story of a yoga class she almost quit teaching. After opening The Yoga Barn, one particular class began creating something she didn't expect: resentment. Not toward her students. Not toward teaching. But toward a schedule and format that no longer fit the season of life she was in. What followed became a lesson in yoga philosophy, self-study, truthfulness, and having the courage to listen when something feels off. In this episode, we'll explore: * The difference between teaching from obligation and teaching from alignment * The yogic practice of Svadhyaya (self-study) * The role of Satya (truthfulness) in personal growth * Why fear often gets louder when we're on the verge of change * How a simple schedule adjustment transformed an entire class experience * A complete class theme centered around the question: "What if you trusted what you already know?" Because sometimes the answers we're looking for aren't hidden. They're simply buried beneath expectations, fear, and the noise of what everyone else wants. Reflection Questions: * Where in your life have you outgrown something? * What truth have you been avoiding? * What are you continuing to do simply because you've always done it? * What might become possible if you trusted what you already know? * Where might you need the courage to make a change? Self-study isn't just learning about yoga. It's learning about yourself. And sometimes the most important thing we discover is that we're allowed to evolve. EP113 | Be Here Now: The Lesson I Didn't Expect to Learn in New York

I went to New York expecting an incredible Broadway show. I didn't expect to leave with a yoga class theme. In this episode of Theme Weavers, I share the surprising lesson I took away from Just In Time, the Broadway musical about Bobby Darin starring Jeremy Jordan and Isa Briones. What began as an afternoon of incredible music, joy, and storytelling turned into a powerful reminder about living fully in the present moment, especially when life feels uncertain. As a parent, and particularly as a parent of a child with a complicated heart history, I know how easy it is to get pulled into the future. To worry. To imagine. To try to protect the people we love from every possible outcome. But sitting in that theater, I was reminded that life isn't happening in our worries. Life is happening now. In this episode, we'll explore: * The unexpected lesson I learned from Bobby Darin's story * Why "Be Here Now" became my personal mantra (and even a tattoo) * Patanjali's teachings on memory (smriti) and imagination (vikalpa) * How the Yoga Sutras help explain why staying present is so difficult * A complete yoga class theme built around present-moment awareness * The thematic through-line I used throughout class * Reflection questions to bring this teaching off the mat Because the future exists as imagination. The past exists as memory. But this moment is real. Reflection Questions: * Where is your mind spending most of its time right now: memory, imagination, or presence? * What are you missing because you're busy worrying? * Where are you postponing joy until life feels more certain? * What would change if you trusted this moment enough to fully inhabit it? The future is unknown. The past is already gone. Your life is happening now. Ep112 | The Cost of Swallowing Your Truth

After returning from a weekend trip to New York City, I found myself carrying something unexpected home with me: resentment. Not because the trip was terrible. In fact, parts of it were wonderful. We saw incredible Broadway performances, shared meaningful experiences, and created memories I'll cherish. And yet, I came home with a clenched jaw, a stiff neck, and a lot of unresolved feelings. In this episode, I share a personal story about conflict avoidance, people-pleasing, and the challenge of speaking up when something doesn't feel right. Through the lens of two foundational teachings from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, Ahimsa (non-harming) and Satya (truthfulness), we explore a question many of us wrestle with: What happens when kindness and honesty seem to be at odds? Together we'll unpack why peace and avoidance are not the same thing, how resentment can serve as information rather than failure, and why yoga invites us to practice both truth and compassion at the same time. I'll also walk you through how I transformed this real-life experience into a yoga class theme, including: • A dharma talk built around Ahimsa and Satya• Creating a thematic through-line phrase• Using poses and movement as metaphors for the teaching• Weaving the theme throughout class• Bringing the lesson full circle in a closing dharma talk Whether you're a yoga teacher looking for inspiration or someone navigating the delicate balance between honesty and compassion in your own life, I hope this conversation gives you something meaningful to reflect on. In this episode: • Ahimsa (non-harming) and Satya (truthfulness)• Why resentment can be valuable information• The difference between peacekeeping and avoidance• Speaking truth without cruelty• Compassion without self-abandonment• Building a yoga class around a personal life experience Reflection Question: Where in your life are you practicing kindness but avoiding truth? And what might it look like to practice both a little more skillfully than yesterday? Thank you for listening to Theme Weavers. Ep110 | Compassion Over Comparison: Meeting Yourself Where You Are

Have you ever looked at an old photo of yourself and felt a sudden, sharp pang of judgment? Maybe it was a version of you that moved more easily, looked stronger, or balanced with more grace. It’s a common experience, but in today’s episode, Heidi explores why this "Montage Trap" is the ultimate thief of peace—and how our yoga practice can help us dismantle it. The inspiration for this episode came while Heidi was digging through 13 years of photos for her son’s Bar Mitzvah video. Seeing past versions of her yoga practice led to a sneaky inner dialogue of "I used to be..." and "Why can't I still...?" This realization sparked a powerful class focused on hip rotation and balance—a physical territory where aging and change are often exposed immediately. In this episode, we explore: * The Montage Trap: Why viewing ourselves as static photos instead of dynamic processes creates unnecessary suffering. * Anitya (Impermanence): How yoga teaches us to accept that change is the only constant, and why resisting it leads to "the argument with reality." * Vairāgya (Non-attachment): Redefining non-attachment as the practice of "discolouring" memories so they don't make our present moment feel lacking. * Physiological Compassion: Why meeting yourself with kindness isn't just a "nice" idea, but a biological requirement for balance and stability. * Ahiṃsā as Non-Comparison: Viewing the act of comparing our current selves to past versions as a form of internal violence, and how to put down that weapon. * Warrior 3 to Half Moon: A conversational look at a "peak movement" that reveals our habits of self-criticism and invites us to "meet ourselves here." Yoga is not a performance; it is a relationship. And like any healthy relationship, it requires compassion, not judgment—especially as we move through the seasons of our lives.
