The Daughter Is In The Mother

I sat with my mother's grief long enough for them to introduce their roots to me. They said, "Chineloromiheoma, we travel all the way back to the women who nurtured silence and swore an oath to shame." They said, "Promise us, daughter, that the world will hear your voice and you will not bury your words." It's because of them that I write: the mothers who bore mothers who gave me their stories. Mothers who bore lineages that carry untold pain. Mothers who were told they were too much and forced to hide their wings. Because of them, daughters like me will flap our wings and soar. Daughters like me will scream. Daughters like me will be heard. To daughters who are living the stories their mothers dreamed of. For our healing. For our ancestry. For the ones coming after us.

You Are More Than Your Thoughts
