Welcomed, Loved, & Cared For
Following after Jesus is difficult. It is especially difficult when we consider that our culture seems to be in opposition to how He calls us to live in response to His Word. To best navigate how we can live in obedience to God while caring for those around us, we must understand our culture. In this episode, we will answer the question, "What is Culture?!" We will point to the calling every Christian has on their lives no matter what age they are: every disciple (Christ follower) is called is to be a missionary reaching those around us with the message of the Good News of Jesus. Understanding our culture will help us communicate with others like the Apostle Paul did in Acts 17:16-34 (Read it!) as He shared the finished work of Jesus with those in the city of Athens. In this episode we share a helpful tool to engage culture (we will use this guide regularly in all future episodes) - 3(D) Guide for Media/Culture Choices. The 3(D) Guide was created by Walt Mueller who is a youth culture expert - check out all his recourses at https://www.cpyu.org/ [https://www.cpyu.org/] Discover - What is being communicated? What worldview is it promoting? At first glance, is it good or harmful for you? Discern - Our worldview (glasses through which we see everything through) as Jesus followers, is God's Word. Evaluate if culture is good or harmful in light of the truth and authority we see in the Bible. Decide - Make a decision to accept culture and engage it. Engaging culture allows an individual to communicate with others in that culture as a missionary does: to point to Christ as your only hope. A person must make the decision to reject culture when they understand it is harmful to their relationship with the Lord and others.
