WHAT WANTS TO HAPPEN: A podcast from the somatic edge of becoming
"All of Western medicine is built on getting rid of pain, which is not the same as healing. Healing is actually the capacity to hold pain." —Dr. Gabor Maté In the wake of this week's Israel—Hamas conflict, I did my best to share some thoughts on the discomfort–pain–suffering continuum, which I believe is crucial to understanding our collective aversion to holding pain—the very capacity Dr. Maté identifies as crucial to healing our individual and collective wounds. Content Warning: This episode contains reference to warfare and the Israel—Gaza—Hamas conflict. Signs from your body that this content is a “no” for your system right now include but are not limited to: elevated heart rate, squeezing sensation in the stomach and guts, tightness in the throat, sensations of nausea, blurred vision, and sudden sleepiness. IF you experience any such sensations, take three deep breaths in through the nose and follow them down into your tailbone. Hold for three beats and release slowly through the mouth. Go on with your day—and if you still want to listen, give yourself a window of time to reset and make that decision from a consensual place.
