When We Are Happy With Our Work

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2295449/fan_mail/new] When We Are Happy With Our Work Sometimes we work just to pay the bills. Sometimes because it’s our duty. But when we are happy with our work, our lives are better—and the work is too. “Serve the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing.” (Psalm 100:2) Not every job or task is pleasant or fulfilling in itself. But it is easier to work with gladness when we understand how our work serves something beyond ourselves. I had a grand-uncle by marriage who worked two forty-hour-a-week jobs. He kept one for thirty-five years and the other for twenty-five years. When asked how he did it, he said he couldn’t provide for his family the way he wanted to with one job. So he was glad to work two because of what it allowed him to do. We can work and serve with gladness when we understand how our work makes a difference—when we recognize that we serve God by serving one another. Capable enough. Good enough. And sometimes we place that same burden on others. We expect people to earn our respect. Earn our acceptance. Earn our love. But the witness of scripture points us in a different direction. Paul reminds us that while we were still weak, while we were still far from who we were created to be, God’s love is already being poured out for us. (Romans 5:6-8) Not after we prove ourselves. Not after we get everything right. Not after we become worthy. But now. Love is not a reward for achievement. It is a gift. And the invitation is for us to freely give what we have freely received.
