Over At The 1’ in 12’

Home of Metal presents At The 1 in 12 Club, a story of liberty, equality and solidarity rooted in Bradford’s radical heart.Founded in 1981 by the Claimants Union, the 1 in 12 Club emerged as a self-managed, member-run social centre offering affordable entertainment for Bradford’s unemployed community. Built on anarchist principles of co-operation and mutual aid, it quickly became a vital hub for DIY culture. 1 in 12 is more than a building, it is a living community committed to collective action and social change. This podcast series (with accompanying publication) paints a portrait of the Club through reflections from those involved across four decades. Their stories reveal a place of joy, solidarity, resistance, transformation and family; a community that adapts and evolves with the needs of its members. In making this series we spoke with Club members past and present, and musicians who have passed through its doors, including Bri (Doom), Aki Nawaz (Southern Death Cult / Fun-Da-Mental), Alice Nutter (Chumbawamba), Ian Lynch (Lankum), Steve Von Till (Neurosis) and Michael McKeegan (Therapy?) and many more. This is a Capsule production and a Home of Metal project, commissioned by Bradford 25 UK City of Culture. Home of Metal’s work connects music, social history, visual art and fan culture to offer a fresh perspective on counterculture. We celebrate the creativity and community that shape scenes, recognising them as a vital part of our contemporary heritage, shining a light on underground stories that might otherwise fade into the haze. This project was made possible with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. For more info and to read the accompanying publication see www.homeofmetal.com Hosted on Acast. Episode 3: At the 1 in 12 Club - A Place of Creativity

Episode 3: A Place of Creativity This episode dives into the creative heartbeat of the 1 in 12 Club, a space that helped shape four decades of underground culture. Best known as a legendary punk venue, the club hosted artists from Chumbawamba, New Model Army and Southern Death Cult to Doom, Extreme Noise Terror, Bikini Kill, Neurosis and countless others, becoming a cornerstone of the international DIY punk and hardcore scene. But creativity at the 1 in 12 went far beyond raucous gigs. The club fostered an eclectic mix of music events, from raves and folk nights to jazz sessions and avant-garde experiments. It was also home to the Peasants food-growing collective, games and sports teams, theatre groups, political organising, and a vital safe space for people who might not have found a place elsewhere in the city. As Alice Nutter recalls: “Because of seeing Noel’s play—one of Noel’s plays about the end of the world I think. I remember thinking, ‘Oh, I think I could do that.’ And so with the 1 in 12 Drama Collective, I wrote my first play." Episode 2: At the 1 in 12 Club - A Place of Community

Episode 2: A Place of Community In this episode, we explore how the 1 in 12 Club is a vital hub for connection, solidarity, and shared purpose. Through personal stories and memories, we uncover how the space fostered belonging, activism, and a sense of home for those who needed it most. As Gary Cavanagh puts it: “We are a members’ club, so everybody who pays their membership owns the building and there’s no leaders, there’s no ownership, everybody owns it, so it’s collectively run basically.” Podcast produced by Martha Kean This is a Capsule production and a Home of Metal project, commissioned by Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture. Episode 1: At The 1 in 12 Club - A Place of Resistance

Episode 1: At The 1 in 12 Club - A Place of Resistance  We’ll hear about how the club has managed to survive as a social centre owned and run by a membership that operates on the anarchist principles of self-management, co-operation and mutual aid. And whilst the club motto ‘More than just a building’ does speak to those political ideals - sometimes it boils down to more practical matters, as long-running member Jon Gregson so eloquently puts it: “Dialectics is fine, but it doesn't answer the real life question of, who's going to clean the bloody toilets.” Podcast produced by Martha Kean This is a Capsule production and a Home of Metal project, commissioned by Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture.
