EPISODE SUMMARY In this episode, I reflect on an important moment during student computer time when I noticed students using digital messaging systems to communicate hurtful comments toward each other. That moment reminded me that technology itself is not automatically good or bad. Technology is a tool, and how students choose to use those tools matters deeply. I unpack the reality that students are growing up inside rapidly evolving digital spaces where communication, entertainment, relationships, and learning are increasingly happening online. While students may know how to technically use devices and platforms, many still need support developing judgment, empathy, responsibility, and digital citizenship skills that help them navigate those spaces thoughtfully. This connects directly to schools because educators are no longer just teaching academic content. Teachers are also helping students learn how to communicate respectfully online, reflect on technology use, understand consequences, and recognize the humanity behind digital interactions. I discuss why guidance from caring adults remains critically important as students develop maturity and decision-making skills in digital environments. At the end of the day, I believe helping students think about technology is really about helping students think about being human in a digital world.
