EP.038 - Marika Christine // Musician from San Francisco

Episode 38 – Marika Christine // Musician. "In the world of early birds and night owls, very few have mastered the ability to live simultaneously as both, but the one and only Marika Christine is one of these rare and special humans. By morning, she’s selling donuts and coffee, and by evening she’s playing rock shows. In my eyes, Marika might be the eighth wonder of the world because of that! How does she do it? Marika, I’m tired just thinking about your daily schedule. Please, go take a nap for me. Okay, silliness aside…  Marika caught my ear a couple years ago with her tender and catchy jams. She has this sort of effortlessly cool vibe, and she’s really warm and kind and just such a joy to be around. Like a rare butterfly glowing at night sort of vibe. I think she really embodies the kind of creative people I’m drawn to: artists who are just so damn vulnerable, and they harness that vulnerability as a sort of superpower. What happens is that it generates this blanketed aura of grace and swag that follows them wherever they go. That might sound sort of extra, but that’s what I feel. Marika is cool, and I’m glad she’s on today’s episode of BEDROOM™. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Marika talks about how she got into playing music and how participating in musical theatre growing up gave her the experience and tools to be comfortable and confident while performing onstage. She shares stories about her musical life and also dives into her fascination with and interest in the world of audio recording. We talk about her new upcoming album, Enjoy The Clouds, dropping on May 29th via Anxiety Blanket Records, which I’m so excited to get my cassette tape copy of, and Marika shares some behind-the-scenes fun facts about the process of making her new album. We then tap into a few listener-submitted questions, one from Maryam Qudus, the producer, engineer, and musician behind the band Spacemoth, and another question from Maria Donjacour, the musician who plays in Marika’s band and also in the bands Med School and Dinner Date. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where Arshia and I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Marika gives the fans what they want. Big shoutout to Marika Christine for coming on the pod. Welcome to the BEDROOM™, y’all. EP.037 - Mayya // Musician in Mayya, Mild Universe, and Mae Powell's Band

Episode 37 – Mayya // Musician. Alright if there’s one thing about me that y’all know by now is that I fuck with San Francisco hard. This place fucking rips and our creative scene does too. And you know who backs me on that same energy? My homie Mayya.  I can’t exactly recall when I met Mayya, but that’s kind of the beauty of it. I would see her around at house parties years ago and she’s been so integral in the local music scene here in San Francisco. Honestly, it’s kind of hard to imagine a scene without Mayya. She’s low-key a pillar and those who know - well, they fucking know. She’s got her own solo project, which kicks ass and is so uniquely her own, but she also plays bass in a handful of local bands too. So needless to say, Mayya’s got reach.  What I love about Mayya is she kind of bridges the past and present for me, she’s has this like old school SF vibe but also is uniquely fresh and individualistic - in other words, she has a confident voice to her music and I love an artist who is just so uniquely themself. Ain’t no rocks in my shoes when I speak on Mayya! In this episode of BEDROOM™, Mayya shares about her upbringing in San Francisco and how she fell in love with making music. We talk about David Bowie and how freeing it can be to genre bend and genre blend. We also talk about the importance of having a wide array of different influences in the art one makes and how important it is to not be bound to one specific style. It might be good for marketing, but it sure ain’t good for the soul and the artistic allowance to feel free. Mayya then dishes out the scoop on her creative process and how she goes about writing and making her magical music. We talk about her collaborations with local musicians Spencer Noble and Sam Jones and the state of the current local music scene in San Francisco, what’s hot and what’s not. Mayya then shares some behind-the-scenes scoop on the upcoming album she’s recording and also talks about being part of Mae Powell’s band and Mild Universe, former BEDROOM™ alum. We then tap into a few listener-submitted questions, one from Zelma Stone, former BEDROOM™ alum and Los Angeles–based musician, and one from Chris Cohen, a Richmond-based musician who Mayya has toured with. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where Arshia and I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Mayya gives the fans what they want. EP.036 - Donta Santistevan // Thrasher Magazine's Illustrator & Designer

Episode 36 – Donta Santistevan // Illustrator. Designer. "The homie Donta has fulfilled the dream. He grew up in California, obsessed over the worlds of skateboarding and art, eventually went to art school, and after years of hard work has found himself at the intersection of art and skate heaven, working as an in-house Illustrator and Designer for The Mag aka The Bible aka Thrasher Magazine. He’s got styles for miles, talent for days, and a warm and friendly heart to boot. Donta’s illustrations are sick as fuck, full of color, and the dude is just such a nice guy. Needless to say, I’m a fan. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Donta shares a pivotal moment in his creative life, how he found himself in a bit of a rut in his late 20s, spending his time working at a cafe and freelancing on the side. After some self-reflection, he decided he wanted to shoot his shot and follow his dreams to make it in the world of skateboarding and get some official board graphics made. After all, you miss all the shots you don’t take, and my G was shooting full-court shots - eventually, he started making them! He tells the story of how he landed his first board graphic series for Ed Templeton’s iconic company: Toy Machine. From there, he talks about making board graphics for enjoi, Chico Brenes’ Central, and the Crail Camp’s own, Chocolate Skateboards. Donta then shares how he got the job at Thrasher and what it is he actually does over there. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in the art department at Thrasher, listen up, because Donta dishes game. From there, we switch topics and Donta shares about his new art book, “Something Cheeky”, a collection of illustrations that capture the admiration of every curve, crease, and wiggle of the human body. It’s an illustrated book full of joyful and intimate moments, all turned into art. It’s 104 pages, hardcover, and if you want to snag a copy, it’s currently available at DONTASMA.COM [https://www.dontasma.com/]. Use code BEDROOM to get 0% off. Come on, y’all. Support my dude!!! We also tap into a few listener-submitted questions, one from Michelle Fernandez Villalba, one from Steve Corona, and one from Andrew Snarr. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where Arshia and I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Donta gives the fans what they want. EP.035 - Fez Moreno // Poster Designer. Illustrator. ( Posters for Dead & Co, Kim Gordon, Kurt Vile, etc. )

Episode 35 – Fez Moreno // Poster Designer. Illustrator. “Fez Moreno is a concert poster god. He’ll probably cringe when he hears me say that, but it’s the truth. He’s picked up the metaphorical-baton from the old school 60s psychedelic masters like Rick Griffin and Stanley Mouse and brought it into the present, blending that lineage with his own unmistakable flavor. It’s no secret, that my dude Fez is in high demand for his incredible creations, all hand illustrated on paper like the good old days. Fez has made posters for legendary bands like Eagles, Beach Fossils, Hot Tuna, Kurt Vile, Ty Segall, Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr., Goose, Cat Power, and Dead & Company, and so many more. I’m genuinely stoked to share this conversation with one of my favorite poster artists. Fez Moreno - put some respect on his name, G! In this episode of BEDROOM™, Fez talks about his past life in Austin, Texas and how he eventually landed in San Francisco. He shares stories about creating liquid light shows for concerts and, of course, making concert posters, which is the definitive heartbeat of this episode. We go behind the scenes as Fez walks through his process for crafting the magical, psychedelic posters he’s known for. He also pulls back the curtain on the less glamorous side of the job, like printing and packing posters. And yes, there is a right way to pack a poster, and Fez gives a step-by-step breakdown for anyone coming up in the game. Fez opens up about his upcoming fine art plans and where he hopes to take his creative career beyond the poster world. We also get into his collaboration with Matt Cliff on a Topps Baseball Cards project, and talk about posters for The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Billy Strings, Kim Gordon, and more. Fez shares insight on dealing with overstepping clients and standing up for yourself in the wild world of being a self employed artist. We also tap into a few listener submitted questions, including one from Jordan Kamp of Kampground Designs, the Brooklyn based graphic and poster artist, and another from Andre Poise, illustrator and graphic designer, a fellow poster designer from the country of Georgia. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Fez gives the fans what they want. Big shoutout to Fez Moreno for coming on the pod. aflevering EP.034 - Krusty Wheatfield // Cartoonist. Artist. artwork

EP.034 - Krusty Wheatfield // Cartoonist. Artist.

Episode 34 – Krusty Wheatfield // Cartoonist. Artist. “Alright, first things first, let’s get it on record: I’m a fan of Krusty. Their art style is so raw and whimsical - there’s a whirlwind of relatability and humanity all within their little old line. Usually, their work is either absolutely full of color, where it just sort of explodes off the page, or it’s often just a single color, like black on white paper, and each approach has this entrancing aspect to it. It’s like yin-yang, I’m into both approaches and they each feed off of each other, creating the artist balance that is the work of Krusty Wheatfield. My guess for why I love their work so much is their subject matter. Krusty has this singular perspective and magical ability where they transform the small, usually unappreciated moments in our daily lives - the tiny, beautiful details - and they turn the spotlight on them. Their work gives me hope and honestly it rewards and reminds me with of an appreciation for life, the human experience, and how these little moments in our lives are actually the big moments.  In this episode of BEDROOM™, Krusty and I talk about digital vs. analog drawing, how Krusty got into making comics, and the moral dilemmas of the modern artist when they get commissioned to work for corporations they may not believe in. We get into their schooling at UC Berkeley and the importance of finding community, self-publishing, making zines and comics, and entering the DIY world of the Bay Area underground scene. We talk about how absolutely fun the act of drawing is and how we just wish more people would practice it because of how fulfilling it is. Krusty then shares their experience teaching kids art and comics at The International School of San Francisco, as well as the long-term collaboration they’ve had with San Francisco’s very own punk godfather, V. Vale - writer and publisher of RE/Search Publications - which is possibly the only surviving ’70s punk publisher. We talk about Vale and Krusty’s joint residency in 2025 at Headlands Center for the Arts in Marin, and we also get the scoop on their recently published comic anthology, Search For Weird, which was released in France. We then tap into some listener-submitted questions from Justin Kohlberg, the cinematographer and filmmaker behind the musical project Moonrun. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Krusty gives the fans what they want. Big shoutout to Krusty Wheatfield for coming on the pod. Welcome to the BEDROOM™, y’all.
