We're joined by Dr. Jon Rosenfield from San Francisco Baykeeper to talk about all things related to the State of Water and Science for California, particularly the Bay-Delta. For example, how do freshwater flows dictate the health of the Bay-Delta? What about when to use the best available science for water-related management? This interview highlights the relevance of how water is inherently intertwined with science and how that affects our waterways. Find out more on this intricate episode of Delta Flows. Delta Flows Podcast EP. 5 (ft. Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla & Morgen Snyder)

Delta Flows EP 5 Description: The Delta Tunnel would be the largest transfer of public wealth in California for the last forty years. Officially known as the Delta Conveyance Project, the Delta Tunnel has been called a “climate adaptation project” which is simply not true. It has more accurately been referred to as a zombie project because it has been proposed in various forms over the last four decades. The Delta Tunnel jeopardizes the environment and our communities as a whole. It would devastate the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta through further eradication of endangered fish species, declining water quality, destroying seven-generational family farms, construction pollution, and the overall negative impacts on Tribes and disadvantaged communities. Tony Gladney will be discussing the current threats from the project, the flaws of the project, as well as ways to take action with Executive Director Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla and Policy Analyst Morgen Snyder with Restore the Delta.  Want to advocate against the Tunnel? As California endures its second year without a commercial salmon season, the toll on families, businesses, and the environment has become increasingly evident. Chinook salmon, a critical keystone species, are disappearing from our rivers, putting entire food webs and communities at risk. In this episode, we’re joined by Scott Artis, Executive Director of the Golden State Salmon Association, to examine the consequences of this closure. From economic losses to ecological disruptions, we explore how this absence is felt across California and what it means for the future. Can we restore balance, protect this iconic species, and bring back a healthy salmon fishery? Join us for an in-depth look at the complexities of salmon recovery and the hopes for a sustainable future in California’s rivers and oceans.

Tune in and learn about how the Delta smelt got tied up with Big Ag, California Water Wars, and national political divide. How have these widespread narratives affected the species as a whole and environmental justice communities in the region? What happens when scientific data goes into the wrong hands? The Delta smelt, a small fish that is an indicator species for the Bay-Delta estuary and is in massive population decline, has faced media onslaught from conservative news outlets over the years, reframing how the fish is seen. This episode explores the controversies surrounding the Delta smelt with Dr. Caleb Scoville, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Tufts University.  Media Review of Right-Wing Narratives on the Delta smelt [http://restorethedelta.org/wp-content/uploads/Media-Review-of-Right-Wing-Narratives-Delta-Smelt.pdf] Learn more about Dr. Caleb Scoville’s work here: The Delta Smelt Controversy in Sociological Perspective [https://californiawaterblog.com/2024/08/11/the-delta-smelt-controversy-in-sociological-perspective/] That Tiny, Tiny Little Fish [https://contexts.org/blog/tiny-little-fish/] Visit his website [https://calebscoville.com/] or Google Scholar [https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=R7OIAG0AAAAJ&hl=en] for more academic perspectives.
