Karan Batra and Robert Jackson have been a couple since they were in training school. But they never counted on Brexit and the overt racism it would release, or on the stress of being an EMT and constantly dealing with the aftermath of car crashes. Just as their relationship seems to be cracking up, a solstice eve call to a remote cottage in the woods takes Karan and Rob on a voyage of discovery; a voyage that reminds them of a simple, elusive truth: when the world gets too ugly, donât give up on what matters most. As always, Fox creates an atmosphere that seeps into our souls as we read. There is an unusual collision of past and present, an acknowledgement of contemporary reality that seems to be particularly British, but is in fact applicable to the USA and indeed much of the world today. Here is not so much a âChristmas storyâ as a little fable for our times. Left me teary-eyed This was hard to read. Ostensibly, this is just a sweet little story about a couple struggling through a few issues. At its core though, it's a piece about grief. The way the face of our world has changed and how we cope with that change. It manages in a remarkably short space to paint a picture of the Northeast of England, post-coal, post-Brexit, with issues of class and race, which cut a little too close to the bone for me. It's really well done. Thanks for writing this Ms Fox, I needed to read it. When the ghost of Christmas past wears a Christmas sweater A clever, sweet, chilling, and beautiful take on The Ghost of Christmas Past and their brethren. In this version, we get an elderly woman in a Christmas sweater, a photo album, snow drifts, and some sherry that keep things grounded while simultaneously hinting at what's really going on. The cold of Christmas time can invade inside and out. In less than 50 pages, Fox gives us rather fully fleshed out characters, including supporting, and their lives come loaded with humor, loss, caring, and love.

Rick Reed's gentle telling of bringing together two good men by way of their mutual love for a sweet little beagle was wonderful.

Members Reviews: Donât waste the time on this WTF was that!? The only relation that this story had to the blurb was a similarity of names. We got absolutely no insight into any of the characters other than to learn that the main character was bored of being special. He had absolutely no relationship, or interaction with, Admiral Patrick. And he only travelled with Commander Armstrong to Station Delta, but was at no time assign to work for the lecher who promptly drugged and raped him. And then it ended with the main character somehow being ok with that.

Evin is a single dad, raising his son, Micah, alone after the death of his husband, Daniel. One day, he burns his own hand and goes to the ER. When he meets his doctor, Ben Perez, his ex-boyfriend who ruined his heart at college. Ben is shocked to meet Evin, the love of his life, after all these years. Even if heâs responsible for their break up, he can't let him go like that, not after seeing the exhausted, alone father that Evin is now. So Ben does what he can to be with Evin, even if its only as a friend, this time he refuses to walk away from him. I loved this book. Ben and Evin are adorable. Evin is completely broken when he meets Ben at the ER. Heâs a single dad, his son Micah is only 6 months old, heâs exhausted, mourning his husband and trying to deal with his baby. I wanted to babysit his son for him, really, it was so well written that I could see him with dark circles and pain in his eyes. I loved Ben, even if he was the one breaking up their relationship, I loved how matured he was when he meets Evin after all these years. I loved how he decided to be there for them, and how he tried to help Evin. But I loved it more when he spills his heart out, when he tells the truth to Evin, that he still loves him, never stopped, and heâll wait for him to be ready. I loved that, I loved the fact he took responsibility for ending their relationship and breaking their hearts. I love how simply and easily he came back in Evin and Micah lives. Besides, the author did something really good with his characterâs psyche. Evin struggled with so many fears and trouble that he couldnât be all right or fine without help. And Ben is this help, the shoulder and the arms that Evin needs. And you know what, my big romantic heart sighed for them, and smiles happily too (and I may or may not have fallen hard for Micah and his chubby cheeks) So itâs 4 OptimuMMâs for Micah and his 2 daddies. optimummblog.wordpress.com 4.5 Stars I can say with honesty that I have never been disappointed by a Nordwell book, and this is no exception.
