From "Women Can't Raise Money" to 40 Books: Linda Lysakowski's 35 Years of Fundraising Wisdom

Linda Lysakowski was once told "women can't raise money like men can" — right after she'd been doing two jobs solo and raising more money than ever. Her response? Leave and build a legendary career. With 35+ years as a philanthropic consultant, the ACFRE designation (held by ~100 professionals worldwide), 40+ books, and 19 online courses, Linda is one of the most experienced voices in nonprofit fundraising. In this conversation, Kris and Linda discuss: • Gender bias in fundraising — then and now • Why women have come to dominate the nonprofit sector • The real barriers to starting a nonprofit (hint: it's not the paperwork) • What new nonprofits get wrong about boards and grant funding • Self-publishing vs. traditional publishing for nonfiction authors • Why Linda, at 83, is still writing books and loving every minute of it Find Linda's courses and books at learnwithlinda.online or search her name on Amazon.

Never Too Old: The Soccer Grannies Movement That Started With One Kick

Women’s stories, women’s leadership, and women’s wisdom — interviews, memoirs, and commentary for women that encourage them to laugh and feel empowered. The true story of South African grandmothers who found health, joy, and each other through soccer — proof it's never too late to start something new. 🔑 What You’ll Hear in This EpisodeWhat happens when a group of 40–80-year-old grandmothers in rural South Africa pick up a soccer ball for the very first time? They change the world. In this episode, Kris sits down with Jean Duffy, debut author of Soccer Grannies: The South African Women Who Inspire the World, to share one of the most uplifting stories you’ll hear all year. Jean takes us inside the remarkable journey of Becca Ntsanwisi — humanitarian activist, radio host, cancer survivor, and the visionary woman who founded the South African Soccer Grannies. After being diagnosed with colon cancer at 35, Becca looked around her hospital ward, and instead of focusing on her own struggle, she saw older women suffering from preventable conditions — and made a vow to change that. What started as a few grandmothers doing aerobics in a field — until a soccer ball rolled their way — has grown into a movement of 200+ teams across every province of South Africa and beyond. These women, many of whom survived apartheid, raised families shattered by the AIDS epidemic, and faced poverty and violence, found something extraordinary through the game: better health, community, joy, and each other. Jean’s own story mirrors the grannies in a beautiful way. She picked up soccer at age 40 on the sidelines of her daughter’s game in Massachusetts — and that decision eventually led her to write a book, travel to South Africa, and play in a packed stadium at the 2023 Grannies International Football Tournament in Limpopo. In 2025, Becca hosted the second tournament — bigger, bolder, with BBC and NPR coverage. And she’s already planning the next one for 2027. (Because, as Becca says, they can’t wait four years between tournaments at their age! 😄) This conversation is a masterclass in resilience, late-blooming courage, and what's possible when you simply refuse to believe it's too late. * How Becca Ntsanwisi — called the “Mother Teresa of Limpopo” — turned a hospital vow into a global movement * The real challenges these women face: apartheid, AIDS, poverty, witchcraft accusations, and social pushback * Why soccer didn’t just improve physical health — it transformed emotional wellbeing and built a life-saving community of support * How Jean (an engineer with no writing background!) spent 8 years turning this story into an award-winning book * The tearful moment in Boston that revealed what soccer truly meant to one grandmother who lost five children to AIDS * The first-ever Grannies International Football Tournament — and what it felt like to march into a packed stadium as a grandma soccer player * Where to find women’s soccer teams near you — and why it’s never too late to start 📚 About Jean DuffyJean Duffy is the debut author of Soccer Grannies: The South African Women Who Inspire the World, which won three awards and has been translated into Japanese. Her nonfiction writing has been published in the Boston Globe, Concord Monitor, PBS Next Avenue, and more. All proceeds from the book go directly to the Becca Ntsanwisi Foundation. 🔗 Find the book and learn more about the Soccer Grannies movement. 💛 Enjoyed this episode? aflevering The Pushback Women Still Face Online artwork

The Pushback Women Still Face Online

This episode of Kris Talks About the Wisdom of Women features a sharp, funny, and deeply honest conversation with queer fantasy romance author Claire E. Jones, whose work has reached readers in six countries and climbed into Ingram’s Top 100. Claire reveals a surprising truth: she receives far more pushback for being a woman than for being queer — a realization that surfaced during a Worldcon panel in Seattle. Across the episode, Claire breaks down the emotional labor of being a woman online: misogynistic comments, negging disguised as engagement, hate DMs, sugar‑baby solicitations, bot arguments, and algorithm‑driven harassment. She and Kris compare experiences across TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Red Note, Substack, LinkedIn, and Stage32 — each platform with its own quirks, pitfalls, and cultural dynamics. Claire shares strategies for navigating trolls: when to ignore, when to joke, when to intellectualize, and when to report. She explains how pattern recognition becomes a survival skill, and how creators must protect their emotional equilibrium to keep producing work. The conversation also dives into the chaos of modern digital networking — spoofed emails, PR assistants who don’t read podcast descriptions, AI‑generated outreach full of unedited placeholders, and marketers who chase creators across multiple platforms. Claire even schedules a call with a competitor out of curiosity, turning the nonsense into an opportunity to learn. The episode closes with Claire’s refreshingly grounded take on criticism: she celebrates her first 2.5‑star review as a sign of legitimacy. No author gets only glowing reviews, and she refuses to engage with negativity. Instead, she adds it to her growing collection of stories. Claire shares where listeners can find her books (wide distribution, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and indie stores) and her ambitious plan to publish three books this year — including Marketing in the Age of Aquarius and a re‑imagined, less intimidating version of her self‑published author planner. It’s a warm, witty, and wise conversation about resilience, boundaries, and the strange digital ecosystems women creators must navigate.
