4 Ways to Be More Productive without Being Hard on Yourself Gentle productivity is the secret to consistently great work Most people assume that the secret to productivity is hard work. But here’s the thing about hard work… Working hard easily turns into being hard on yourself. And though it might feel motivating initially, being hard on yourself actually makes you less productive in the long run: Here are 4 ways to harness the power of gentle productivity to get more done and do your best work without being hard on yourself. 1. Stop Fighting Your Procrastination We all feel the urge to procrastinate but it’s how we respond to that urge that matters. The key to staying productive in the long run is to acknowledge the urge to procrastinate instead of fighting with it. 2. Fall in Love with Routines Good routines are the secret weapon of highly focused people. Maintaining focus will always require effort and willpower to some extent. But just because focus sometimes requires effort, doesn’t mean it always should. True focus is about ease, not effort. So how do they do it? How do highly focused people make intense levels of concentration easy? “The imagination is unleashed by constraints. You break out of the box by stepping into shackles.” 3. Energize Your Environment Just like the activities and people in your life give and take energy, so does your physical environment. We’re all control freaks at heart. Which means we love the idea that the solution to everything is inside us and tha, with enough insight and willpower we can accomplish anything. False. Environmental design is the secret weapon for consistently high motivation. 4. Eliminate Competing Motivations One of the most common causes of low motivation is saying yes to competing motivations. Motivation is energy. When you’re full of energy you feel motivated. And when your energy tank is empty, motivation disappears. Well, you can’t expect to have high levels of motivation for the things that matter most to you if you’re wasting all your energy on things that don’t really matter: • How can you possibly have the motivation to say yes to that new hobby or side project when you say yes to 2 hours of Netflix every evening? • How can you possibly make progress on your personal initiative at work if you’re always saying yes to other people’s requests for your time? • How can you possibly find quality time to spend with your partner if you say yes to every social event you get invited to? You have plenty of motivation. Stop wasting it on things that don’t really matter.
