The Plague With No Name - June 5, 1981

On June 5, 1981, the CDC published five paragraphs that changed American history, the first official documentation of what we now call AIDS. What followed was not a simple story of heroes and villains, but a collision between science, fear, politics, stigma, and extraordinary community courage. Reagan's own Surgeon General eventually became one of the clearest voices for confronting the crisis honestly. And the communities most devastated by the disease built, with their own hands, the public health infrastructure that institutions were too slow to provide.

Two Revolutions, One Day - June 4, 1989

On June 4, 1989, two communist governments faced the same crisis and gave opposite answers. In Poland, Solidarity’s decade-long resistance produced a historic election that began the peaceful collapse of the Soviet bloc. In China, the Tiananmen Square protesters were met with tanks, a death toll that has never been officially disclosed, and thirty-six years of enforced silence. This episode holds both stories at once and asks what the gap between them reveals about how democracy is won, and what it costs.

Patriots With Clubs - June 3, 1943

On June 3, 1943, fifty U.S. Navy sailors walked out of a Los Angeles armory with clubs and spent the night dragging Mexican-American teenagers from movie theaters, and the police arrested the victims. What followed was eight days of organized mob violence against American citizens, with the full permission structure of the press, law enforcement, and military command already in place. The Zoot Suit Riots are not a story about a riot. They are a story about how institutions build the permission for violence before anyone throws a punch.

The Bullet That Built Germany - June 2, 1967

The bullet that killed Ohnesorg didn't just end one life. It radicalized a generation and simultaneously produced two of the most consequential political movements in modern German history, the Red Army Faction and the German Green Party. The Plane Britain Let Die - June 1, 1943

On June 1, 1943, a passenger aircraft was shot down over the Bay of Biscay by eight German fighters  and everyone aboard, including one of the most famous actors in the world, was killed. The British government has never fully explained what it knew. The most sensitive documents from that day were quietly reclassified, and they will remain sealed until 2056. Three competing theories exist. Not one of them is clean.
