“Scratching the Itch," with Program Director and Associate Professor in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies Dr. Kevin Schuer

As a touring musician in a rock band, Kevin Schuer had experienced the life of traveling on the road, performing and feeling the adoration of fans. But after starting a family, he knew he needed a backup plan, too. That led him down his academic path, where he became a professor in the department of Physician Assistant Studies.   As it turns out, there’s more than one similarity between the two professions. And Dr. Schuer, who still performs regularly, wants to point out that you don’t have to quit exploring your creativity because you have a steady PA job — something he also loves very much, by the way. “Serving Up Success," with third-year RHB student Felipe Gonzalez Seguel

Originally from Santiago, Chile, physical therapist Felipe Gonzalez Seguel began playing sports at a young age, focusing primarily on soccer and basketball. Table tennis was initially just a recreational activity — the kind of “ping-pong” many kids play casually. That changed when a former Chilean national team player began leading a table tennis workshop at his school. As a sophomore, Katie Neglia is already an award-winning researcher here in the College of Health Sciences. An HHS major on the pre-med track, with a Pharmacology minor, she also serves as a CHS Ambassador. And the Carmel, Ind., native was most recently honored by UK with a Gaines Fellowship, a distinctive, two-year program designed to enrich undergraduate education through interdisciplinary coursework, independent research and community engagement. There’s already a lot of wisdom to learn from this sophomore. As we find out why she came to Kentucky, we also learn about managing our time, handling our mental health ... and we learn how to say no. When CHS alumnus Jason Waddles, D.P.T., became a physical therapist, little did he know he would someday be working on the PGA Tour, helping professional golfers in their most important tournaments of the year. Now, he’s doing just that, and it all comes back to one thing, he says.  Saying yes. When an opportunity comes — even if it’s something you don’t necessarily think will result in the perfect path — just say yes.  Now, Waddles is traveling to major tournaments and golfing with some of the biggest names in the game. “Learning About Life and Love for Valentine’s Day,” with Dr. Kyle Kosik and Dr. Danielle Torp-Kosik

Years ago, love blossomed in the wintry wonderland of Toledo, Ohio, when Danielle Torp met fellow student Kyle Kosik.   From there, the pair started hanging out, and it led to dating, then to becoming a couple and getting married.  The couple now have a 2-year-old son, and they work alongside one another here in the College of Health Sciences. For our third annual Valentine’s Day special episode, we get a chance to sit down with yet another couple in athletic training — the Kosiks. We learn how they are able to spend nearly all their time with each other, as well as how they balance work and parenting, and we laugh a lot during the process.
