Two Weirdos: Real Life Real Spirit
What if questioning the church is not what destroyed your faith? What if questioning the church is what finally saved it? Many believers have been taught that asking hard questions is rebellion, doubt is dangerous, and challenging a pastor or church tradition means challenging God. But the church is not God. A denomination is not God. Your pastor is not God. And inherited doctrine should never be protected from honest biblical examination. In this episode of Escaping Religion, Denise exposes why unquestioned religious authority creates fragile faith, spiritual fear, and church hurt. We unpack the difference between questioning God and questioning what people have taught you about God. We also examine how words like heresy, rebellion, deception, and backsliding are often used to silence believers who are beginning to see contradictions between man-made tradition and Scripture. The Bible does not tell us to blindly accept every sermon, prophecy, doctrine, or spiritual leader. Scripture repeatedly tells believers to test, examine, study, and discern. In This Episode, We Discuss Why churches often treat questions like rebellion. The difference between God, Scripture, church leadership, and denominational tradition. How fear of hell, rejection, and spiritual punishment keeps people trapped in unhealthy religious systems. Why “orthodox” does not automatically mean true and “heretical” does not automatically mean false. How pastors and church leaders can become idols when their teachings are treated as unquestionable. Why studying Scripture for yourself is not disrespectful. How to recognize when church loyalty has become more important than truth. Why religious deconstruction does not have to mean abandoning God. How to rebuild a faith that is rooted in truth instead of fear. What Should You Do Next? Start writing down the doctrines you have always been afraid to question. Ask where each belief actually appears in Scripture. Read the surrounding chapters instead of relying on isolated verses. Compare multiple Bible translations. Research the original historical and cultural context. Pay attention to the fruit a teaching produces. Does it create love, truth, justice, humility, and spiritual growth? Or does it create fear, shame, dependency, silence, and control? Pray for discernment without demanding that God confirm what you already believe. Do not replace one unquestionable religious leader with another. Test everybody. That includes pastors, authors, prophets, influencers, podcasters, and even the teachings shared on this show. Core Truth Questioning the church is not the same as rejecting God. Examining doctrine is not rebellion. Discernment is not disrespect. Your faith should not collapse because someone asked you to investigate what you believe. Truth can survive questions. God can survive your questions. And sometimes, the only way to save your faith is to stop allowing religious institutions to define God for you.
