A Mason's Work
Workman's Rule Number Two is don't spread salt. It sits deliberately alongside Rule Number One from Brian Mattocks's book A Mason's Work, which calls on every Mason to spread the cement of brotherly love. The contrast is intentional. Salting the earth is an ancient act of deliberate destruction, and the behavioral equivalent shows up in our conversations every day, often without us noticing. Commiseration is the first flavor of salt examined here. It feels productive because it involves other people and shared feeling, but most commiseration stops well short of any forward motion. What it actually does is fire up the judgment engine, create in-groups and out-groups, and give people a way to feel elevated by running something or someone else down. The soil of the group gets poisoned in small, nearly invisible increments. The corrective is honest self-awareness in the moment. Before commiserating, ask whether there is a question to work against, an action to take, or a conversation that would actually improve the situation. If the answer is no and emotional decompression is genuinely what's needed, name that clearly rather than letting venting drift into something more corrosive. * The origin and meaning of the phrase spreading salt * How commiseration differs from useful emotional processing * The judgment engine and how it drives the urge to commiserate * The in-group dynamic that corrodes community trust over time * Three diagnostic questions to interrupt the commiserating pattern * When collaborative venting is acceptable and when it crosses a line Recognizing which kind of conversation you are in, and which kind you are creating, is the beginning of doing the work differently.
