Today's adventure begins with one goal: catch a wild piranha in the Amazon River. After learning the techniques from my local guides, we head out by boat to fish for one of the rainforest's most infamous predators. But the day doesn't end there. We continue our search for Amazon wildlife, scanning the riverbanks for anacondas, spotting sloths high in the trees, and visiting a unique conservation project to see a giant anteater up close. Along the way, I also learn how tourism has helped protect this part of the rainforest and support the local communities that call it home. To finish the day, I do something I never imagined—I eat the very piranha we caught. After a long boat ride through the Amazon River and its tributaries, I visited a remote village where local families welcomed me into their homes, shared a meal with me, and answered questions about daily life in the jungle. I also heard incredible stories about growing up in the Amazon, surviving snake encounters, and the challenges of living far from modern infrastructure. One of the highlights of the trip was visiting a remote jungle school and speaking directly with the students. We talked about their lives, their dreams for the future, and the differences between growing up in the Amazon and growing up in the United States. Their curiosity, optimism, and perspective on life made this one of the most memorable experiences of my entire Peru trip. Later, we explored the Amazon tributaries searching for sloths, anacondas, monkeys, and other wildlife hidden deep in the rainforest.
