33. Our Midyear Reset: What We're Releasing & What We're Calling In

We're back, we're back, we're BACK! After a little May breather, Rachel and I are here for our midyear check-in and honestly... where did the first half of 2026 go?! We recorded this one from my sunroom with our very official technical support team (aka the cats), and it felt so good to be back on air. We kicked things off talking about Irene’s '80s birthday party. Yes, there were crimping tools, big bows, and way too much hairspray, and we have zero regrets. Irene got her state lash specialist license (woot woot!), and I closed on a new investment property last week. It's a full demo situation but me and my partner are going in hazmat suits-first and we love that energy. Vision boards, resolutions, and rolling with it We had a real conversation about whether any of us actually stick to those January goals and whether we should even be setting them that way. Irene is personally done planning for the Disney princess, white picket fence version of life. Life surprises you. People show you who they are. You just have to roll with it and believe them when they do. What we're releasing in the second half of the year This is the good stuff. We're releasing: * Jobs and spaces that no longer suit us * Relationships and friendships that have run their season * Guilt (the kind that isn't yours to carry) * Obligations that don't belong to you * Anything Marie Kondo would tell you to thank and rehome I'm also personally releasing some responsibility I was still carrying around when it comes to my parents — and realizing that letting that go doesn't mean letting them go. That was a big one for me. What we're calling in Peace &Inner joy! Not just "we're at Disneyland" happy, but a deep, settled, true joy. This month we are coming in ranty and ready, and we have absolutely zero regrets about it. April has been a lot. Between 40 mph winds turning the sky brown and leaving dust literally falling out of my hair, a neighbor who keeps watering her bushes directly onto my freshly washed car, and road construction that somehow always manages to hit at peak rush hour, it's been one of those months where everything is just slightly conspiring against you. We also get into the declining standard of healthcare, why retail theft is making it impossible to buy a pack of razors without a key, and the social media algorithm's complete inability to show us content we actually want. Remember when you had to sit by the radio all day with your finger on the record button, just to capture one song and the DJ wouldn't stop talking over the intro? This episode is a full-on retro rant, and we're diving deep into the nostalgia of growing up in the eighties and nineties. We got into some of our biggest retro loves — I'm talking Miss Pacman at the grocery store, Casey Kasem's Top 40 countdown on Sunday radio, and the pure adrenaline of trying to record your favorite song off the radio before the DJ ruined it by talking over the intro. We also took a hard look at the things we do NOT miss, like Garbage Pail Kids (gross), the original Unsolved Mysteries theme (terrifying), metal playground slides that could literally burn your skin off, and clowns at every single birthday party. No thank you. One thing we both agreed on is how different life was without social media and instant everything. Back then, if you wanted the tea, you had to physically leave your house or call someone on a corded phone and hope their scary grandma didn't answer. We talked about how that kind of forced patience actually built character, even if it was annoying at the time. From busy signals to calling cards to long-distance charges, we really had to work to stay connected with people, and honestly? There was something kind of beautiful about that.
