Was Franklin Pierce the Saddest President of the United States? 19 Sep 2024 --- Franklin Pierce, who pronounced his surname as “purse”, is consistently ranked as one of the worst Presidents in American history. His administration, which occurred in the decade preceding the American Civil War, is cited as one in which the causes of that war were exacerbated by the President’s policies. Though a native of New Hampshire, Pierce generated considerable enmity from his fellow New Englanders, largely due to his stand against the abolitionists that demanded an end to slavery. His political skills were unequal to the challenges he faced in office, and his own Democratic Party refused to nominate him to run for a second term, an almost unheard of circumstance in American politics. His life was one of tragedy and melancholy. His wife’s family disapproved of him. It took eight years of courting before she could be persuaded to marry him. Jane Means Appleton, who eventually became his wife, was deeply religious, hated politics, despised Washington, and opposed the consumption of alcohol to the point she was active in temperance movements in antebellum New England. Pierce, on the other hand, thrived in political and legal maneuvers, drank to excess, and served in several posts in Washington. His views on religion can be surmised by his refusal to take the oath of office as President by swearing on a Bible. He affirmed his oath with his hand on a lawbook. Franklin Pierce entered the Presidency prone to bouts of depression, his wife having refused to accompany him to Washington. Throughout his four years in office, he drank to excess. His was a gloomy, unhappy White House. He may well have been one of the worst presidents in history. Even the closest of brothers have moments that make them wish they’d been born an only child, after all. The Dassler Brothers were, to wit, NOT the closest of siblings. They hated each other so much that they refused to speak to each other. But what makes the feud between the Dassler brothers so unique was that it spilled over from their personal into their professional lives. They split the family shoe making business off into two separate companies that would come to dominate the athleticwear business in a way no one ever had before. The success of their respective companies can, at least in part, be credited to the rivalry between the two brothers, as they pushed their employees to outdo each other as a worldwide audience watched. The feud split apart not only the Dassler family, but their entire hometown as well, as every family was forced to pick a side. The two companies are still household names today, each earning billions annually in sales, still competing against each other for market share, forever locked together by the personal rivalry of their founders. It is not so much a concern for real criminals. As far as most of them go, a perfect crime is any one that they can get away with. There is, perhaps, one notable exception to this - Leopold and Loeb, two well-off, educated students who killed a young boy in 1924 because they wanted to commit “the perfect crime.” It wasn’t murder that excited the duo. It was getting away with murder. As far as they were concerned, that was where the challenge lay. A challenge that, as we all know by now, they failed…miserably. Because Leopold and Loeb were not the criminal masterminds they thought they were. Sure, they had high intellects, but the superiority they liked to flaunt in everyone’s faces was all in their heads. A smart person does not necessarily equal a successful criminal and the pathetic reality was that Leopold and Loeb only committed a string of petty vandalism acts and, once they moved up to a serious crime, they were caught almost immediately.
