Barbara Barrilleaux is the VP of Legal and General Counsel at Brooks Running, the performance running brand owned by Berkshire Hathaway. She leads a 15-person global legal team covering everything from IP and contracts to compliance and privacy across 50+ countries. A former competitive swimmer and former IP litigator, Barbara has guided Brooks through more than a decade of serious growth, including the company's best quarter ever. Barbara gets specific about what it takes to run lean legal at a high-growth consumer brand: how she triages contracts by spend, IP exposure, and data risk; how Berkshire Hathaway's long-term ownership model gives her team room to operate; and what she learned from the scariest moment of her career, when a frivolous lawsuit in a foreign country froze the company's bank accounts overnight. She also shares how active listening helped her catch a bribery attempt early in her career, and why giving business partners context for your questions builds more trust than firing off a checklist. Barbara plays drums in a band called the Cozy Slippers (they toured Europe pre-pandemic), and she makes a compelling case that the skills of a good bandmate and a good GC are the same: humility, listening, and keeping your ego in check. Lower-risk deals get a light touch or no legal review at all. * Frozen bank accounts abroad: A frivolous lawsuit in a foreign country led a judge to freeze all of Brooks' local bank accounts. The team leveraged Berkshire's banking relationships to route funds in and keep operations running. * Catching a bribery attempt: Outside counsel proposed hiring a "professor" for a foreign lawsuit. After 30 minutes of questions, a multi-million-dollar price tag with no defined scope made it clear. Barbara escalated, fired the firm, and found new counsel. * Active listening over 20 questions: Barbara gives business partners context for why she's asking rather than firing off a checklist, and reads body language to know when to pull back. * Source of truth obsession: One accurate system for all corporate subsidiary information, globally. No regional one-pagers that drift out of sync. * AI as a tool, not a replacement: AI helps the team get up to speed faster in unfamiliar jurisdictions, but judgment, relationships, and listening remain irreplaceable. * Brand mission and fulfillment: Barbara connects to Brooks' mission of health and human connection even as a non-runner, and sees that alignment as core to what makes the work meaningful.
