Adorable book about turtle birth Momma turtle lays her eggs, they all hatch and head for the sea, that is, all but one. Can he get back to the safety of the ocean, NO WAIT, that's the wrong directions. My toddler LOVED the pictures. I loved the amount of texture included on the illustrations as well as the story. I especially enjoyed the ending, reading it to my son, for the first time, it made me smile, I kissed my son and told him I would always be there for him. I'd say more, but I do not want to give away the whole story. I highly recommend getting this in paperback, and not as an eBook. It's one you'll want to read again and again. Mahan is a delightful picture book. The text is easy to read, the art is pleasing to the eye, and there are even great messages. In this short tale of about twenty pages, the rhyming text varies in length to make a fluent text. Some pages consist of simply one long sentence while others contain a few quick sentences. The word choices feel about right for the intended young audience, while also not being too simple. Concrete nouns, active verbs, and descriptive adjectives flow across the pages, providing a rich reading experience. My main complaint is that despite well-crafted rhymes, at times I donât feel as if the text contains much rhythm. The plot structure works well too. Readers are immediately made aware that Mama Turtle will not only experience the special moment of birth, but she will also need to protect her eggs from dangers. The angst is not over yet either for, when the baby turtles crawl to the sea, one is left behind. To get home, this turtle now faces a few adventures. How he ends up on a busy street, Iâm not sure, but I appreciate how his rescue happens. Artwork was created by nationally known artist Deborah Mahan, who beautifully brings this nature story to life. A variety of soft green-hued and purple-hued backgrounds create engaging spreads. Expressions of the turtles are endearing and realistic. Many other details fill the landscape too, such as pebbles, starfish, water droplets, tracks, along with the moon at night and the sun by day. Finally, there are the positive and subtle messages. In focusing on just one turtle family, and in providing through information through the plot structure only about how turtles lay their eggs, Mahan has indirectly created a picture book that should encourage appreciation of nature. Also, in its conclusion, lay other messages such as be kind and family is love. Anyone who purchases The Baby Sea Turtle will have access to free audio download.

Members Reviews: Four Stars Decent. 5 stars Perfect army story for young reader. Not scary. Cute! So yesterday my son comes home all excited that he has one more day left in school. They cleaned out their desks and he brought home two books that he said were in his desk. One of them was this book. When I asked if he had read it yet he said no. So I remedied that and read it to him right away. Captain Cat tells the tale of a cat who "joins" the army. He is given his name when some soldiers notice that he has more stripes than they do. He spends his day following the soldiers around but most are too busy to pay attention to him. All except for Pete. Pete always makes time for Captain Cat. Ok so I totally was sitting there while I was reading it asking myself why these drawings remind me of something. It wasn't till today when I was looking up the book and author on Goodreads that I realized that Syd Hoff did some classic children's books that I remember from my youth such as Danny and the Dinosaur and Sammy the Seal. That gave me a smile as I had totally forgotten about those books. I loved the charm of the books and the cuteness of a cat thinking it was joining the army. I also liked at the end when all the soldiers were dreaming of loved ones that Captain Cat was dreaming of Pete and vice versa. So my son enjoyed this very much..wanna guess why? Yep, cause of cats. Put a cat in it and for him it an automatic 5 star. I'm torn on this one because for me it felt a bit dated in that it depicted army life like a 1950s cartoon would. But it was still really cute and my son really enjoyed it. I'll go with 5 out of 5 since my son didn't notice it was dated. **This book was read with my special needs son who is severely learning disabled. The review reflects not only my opinion but his as well Funny and Good Illustrations This is a funny book that shows a cat who jumps to attention at the sound of a bugle, and has more stripes than a drill sergeant. While captains don't wear stripes (they have bars), the book is a funny look at miltary life, from the perspective of a cat who innocently wanders onto an army post and is befriended by a soldier. The book is suitable for K-3, but is also a good choice for older readers who need the confidence that successfully completing a book on his or her own provides. This book was available in my son's elementary school library, which I believe says something for its broad appeal. Captain Cat I bought this book for my grandson. He is beginning to read & he loves books.
