DAY 172: 1 Kings 10–11; 2 Chronicles 9 Solomon’s reign reaches its breathtaking peak as the Queen of Sheba visits Jerusalem and witnesses a kingdom overflowing with wisdom, wealth, order, and glory. Nations stream to hear Solomon’s wisdom, and the promises given to David appear to be flourishing before the eyes of the world. Yet hidden beneath the splendor are the seeds of collapse. The king who was commanded not to multiply horses, gold, and wives does exactly that, and his heart is slowly drawn away from the Lord. The tragedy of 1 Kings 11 is not that Solomon lacked wisdom, but that he failed to obey the wisdom he taught. His disordered loves reshaped his loyalties, and his loyalties reshaped his worship. Ecclesiastes concluded by telling us to fear God and keep His commandments; Solomon’s fall shows what happens when that conclusion is ignored. Ultimately, these chapters point us to Jesus Christ, the greater than Solomon, who is not only wise but perfectly faithful. Where Solomon’s kingdom is torn apart through idolatry, Christ secures an everlasting kingdom that cannot be shaken. DAY 171: Ecclesiastes 7–12 Ecclesiastes reaches its conclusion by pressing beyond the limits of human wisdom and confronting the realities of suffering, injustice, aging, providence, and death. The Preacher refuses simplistic answers. He sees righteous people suffer, wicked people prosper, rulers act foolishly, and every generation return to the dust. Yet the book does not end in despair. Instead, it teaches humility before the God whose wisdom infinitely exceeds our own. Human beings cannot master life, control providence, or escape death, but they can receive life as a gift from God and live in reverent obedience before Him. After examining wisdom, pleasure, wealth, labor, success, and legacy, the Preacher arrives at the only conclusion strong enough to bear the weight of life: “Fear God and keep His commandments.” Ultimately, Ecclesiastes points us to Jesus Christ, who entered this world of vanity and death, bore its curse, conquered the grave, and now offers the only hope that rises above life merely “under the sun.” In Him, death is defeated, judgment is satisfied, and the restless search for meaning finds its fulfillment. DAY 170: Ecclesiastes 1–6 The mood changes dramatically as Solomon turns from teaching wisdom in Proverbs to testing whether anything in this fallen world can ultimately satisfy the human soul. Ecclesiastes 1–6 examines wisdom, pleasure, labor, wealth, accomplishment, time, relationships, and success, only to repeatedly conclude that they are “vanity” when treated as ultimate. The Preacher does not condemn these things as evil; rather, he exposes the futility of asking created gifts to do what only God can do. Even wisdom cannot conquer death, wealth cannot secure lasting joy, and achievement cannot satisfy the deepest longings of the heart. Yet beneath the book’s sobering realism lies a gracious purpose: to strip away false hopes and teach us to receive life as a gift from God rather than an idol. DAY 169: Proverbs 27–29 Proverbs 27–29 brings Solomon’s wisdom collection to a powerful conclusion by showing what is necessary for a people, a household, and a kingdom to endure. These chapters emphasize faithful friendship, humble correction, honest repentance, disciplined households, righteous leadership, and submission to God’s Word. Iron sharpens iron, faithful wounds from a friend are better than flattery, and those who confess and forsake their sins find mercy. Again and again, Solomon contrasts the teachable person with the stubborn fool, warning that individuals and societies alike collapse when correction is rejected. The moral health of a people is directly tied to the character of its leaders and its willingness to live under God’s law. Ultimately, these chapters point us to Jesus Christ, the perfectly wise Friend and righteous King who governs with justice, corrects His people in love, and gives new hearts capable of receiving wisdom. DAY 168: Proverbs 25–26 Solomon’s wisdom now turns from building wisdom to identifying the subtle forms of folly that quietly destroy what wisdom has built. Proverbs 25–26 examines kingship, humility, speech, self-control, conflict, and the character of the fool. Wise words are compared to apples of gold in settings of silver, while reckless speech, pride, gossip, laziness, and quarrelsomeness are exposed for the destructive forces they truly are. These chapters remind us that kingdoms, churches, families, and friendships are rarely ruined all at once. More often, they are slowly eroded by repeated acts of foolishness that go uncorrected. The fool is especially dangerous because he is wise in his own eyes, refusing the very correction that could save him. Ultimately, these proverbs point us to Jesus Christ, the perfectly wise King whose speech, judgment, humility, and self-control are flawless. Through the Gospel, Christ does not merely teach wisdom—He transforms fools into wise men by giving them new hearts that increasingly reflect His own wisdom and righteousness.
