"Beauty is so much more than make-up", says Erika Geraerts, Founder of Australian brand Fluff Casual Cosmetics, and my guest and fellow biz buddy on this episode. With this sentiment in mind and for the second time in a decade (she also co-founded the hugely successful beauty brand, Frank Body), Erika has truly disrupted an industry that has previously mostly told us that we need to wear stacks of make-up or follow a rigorous, multi-product, multi-step beauty routine in order to look or feel good about ourselves. But the needle is shifting, dialogues around the relationship between beauty and self-love are evolving and norms are changing (for the better) - Erika and Fluff are no doubt big drivers of this. In this ep, Eri and I talk about: * how our relationship with beauty/cosmetics and self-love/self-care is changing (particularly during a time when we're all barely going out, mostly interacting through screens and wearing face-masks!) * the challenges associated with being a young female founder * the pressures vs. the realities of 'the start-up dream' * the huge shift in starting in business and launching a brand in 2013 vs. 2020 * how she's using her time in lockdown to write and plan for post iso life! ... amongst a HEAP of other things. Pop a mask on, put your headphones in, go for a socially-distanced walk and take in the wisdom that is this incredible business (and beauty) brain. Erika's song choice for the Girl's Got Moxie S2 guest playlist on Spotify [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5iguqgOJLXuaAw2RB1xC6W?si=cVwd2OBKQRuuCT8p7L7KgQ] is "The Last Best Place" by John Hayes. If you have a vagina and are over 25yrs, you may have experienced a pap smear (now known as a cervical screening in Australia). If you're not yet 25, haven't had a pap smear yet or have been avoiding them, this ep is here as your (our!) friendly reminder that we all need to be getting checked! It's often said that the best ideas come from personal pain points and Katie Norbury's 'Get Papped' initiative is a perfect example of that, after her experience with an abnormal pap smear. In this ep, we talk about: * Cervical screenings (pap smears) - why they're important, what they involve and what they test for * Symptoms to look out for when something's NQR with your intimate health * When to get a cervical screening test and how often * How Katie used her personal experience with an abnormal pap smear to help open up an often uncomfortable conversation and encourage other people to get checked, too * Period poverty and how we can all use simple everyday choices to better support Aussie people with periods (Katie is also the head of Marketing and Communications for the 'Share the Dignity' charity). A li’l reminder that this ep was recorded in iso via Zoom - the sound isn't studio quality (although it gets pretty good after the first few mins) but please bear with us! “The people who do find it shameful have FOR SURE experienced the work of sex workers – they’ve been to a strip club, or they’ve watched porn – so why is the person themselves, when you meet them, not good enough?” These words, by this episode’s guest, Lulu Reynolds, is a huge reason why I wanted to host an episode about sex work. It is an industry shrouded in stigmas, judgement, a level of secrecy and misunderstanding and so in true form of this podcast – a safe space where we can talk about the sometimes uncomfortable – I wanted to delve into all the things people want to know, but are often too embarrassed to ask, with an aim of breaking down some of these stereotyped stigmas that surround the sex industry and the people within it. Earlier this year, I put a call out on the Girl’s Got Moxie Community Group on Facebook, and asked YOU, our Moxettes, what you were most curious about when it came to sex work. Here are some of your questions, as answered by Lulu… * What did you parents say when they found out what you do? * Is what you do legal? * Do you enjoy it? * Is it safe? How do you keep yourself safe? * Do you use your real name? * How do you manage relationships outside of your work? * How do you manage your period?! * What’s the most common thing clients ask or come to you for? * Can you see yourself doing this long-term? PLZ NOTE: This episode is not intended as a definitive guide – it’s just one person’s experience, but one that is so openly and generously shared. We talk about sex work, intimacy and companionship, anxiety, isolation and we also every so slightly touch on sex trafficking, so please note that this episode may be triggering for some people who have had negative experiences with any of these things. It is also definitely NSFW, so pop your headphones in...! A li’l reminder that you might hear the occasional plane, bike, bird, etc in the background – these eps are usually recorded in the comfort of my home, my guest's home/workplace, and so they are not highly edited! In Ella's words, she's "An Aussie mum, wife, writer, Advertising boss lady and now (unfortunately), one of 'those cancer people' ". This is not just 'another cancer story' and it's definitely not a 'journey' - "it's an absolute sh*t-show", as she puts it. At just 36, Ella Ward was diagnosed with - wait for it - anal cancer. Who even knew this was a thing? Especially in an otherwise healthy 36 year old woman?! A self-confessed over-sharer, Ella decided early on in her diagnosis that she was going to document her sh*t-show and share it publicly on social media - and often, hilariously so (it feels a bit wrong saying that about something like this but it's not an understatement! You'll see/hear!). We talk about fear, the importance of therapy as preventative self-care, IVF, early onset menopause, Jude Law (who is Ella's titanium Hollywood leave pass, if anyone listening can hook a gal up?) and of course, the dreaded big (anal) "C". PLEASE bear with us on the sound in this ep. Given that we recorded during Covid-19/isolation, we opted for an appropriately distanced Zoom call instead of a face-to-face mic recording. So, we're relying on computer mics here that are certainly not studio quality - though let's be real, my eps never are! They're intended to be a li'l raw and not overly produced and are just like casual convos between pals - because really, that's exactly what is going on here. Join our convo and do yourself a solid and go find/follow Ella on IG. I.LOVE.THIS.EPISODE. I met Life Coach Michaela Rosandich last year at an event about period poverty and period shame that I was speaking at, and we just kinda hit it off: "Michaela, will you be on my podcast and talk about that thing you said earlier about period shame being a societal construct created by the patricarchy?" "Sure! When does it start?" And here we are. Michaela started her career in corporate marketing but had her "a-ha!" moment in 2016, which is when she became a life coach and started her business 'Empress, Crow and Rabbit', supporting high achieving women (us, duh!) to better understand, explore and harness the 'super-powers' we have throughout our menstrual cycles - by understanding the different and changing energies throughout our cycles, and by tracking these, we can change our work-flows to suit; in turn helping life in general flow more smoothly. We talk: * How Michala made the career leap from Corporate Marketing to Life Coach * Menstrual Super-powers and how to get the best out of each phase of your period * The different phases of your period, the moon, and how the two are connected * Period shame * The history of matrimony, matriarchy and patriarchy Michaela's song choice for the Girl's Got Moxie S2 guest playlist on Spotify [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5iguqgOJLXuaAw2RB1xC6W?si=cVwd2OBKQRuuCT8p7L7KgQ] is "Hey Mickey" by Toni Basil.
