Ep. 61: Becoming Aware of Your Fear-Based Thought Patterns

Have you ever noticed how quickly your mind fills in the blanks when you feel activated? Someone doesn't text you back. A friend seems quieter than usual. Your boss sends an email asking if you have a minute to talk tomorrow. Within seconds, your mind already has a story.  What's fascinating is that our bodies often respond to these stories long before we even vet out whether they are true or not. Our heart races, our stomach tightens, we feel anxious, and we start looking for evidence. Our minds don’t like unanswered questions, so they answer them The big problem is, fear is usually the loudest voice.  This episode, I’m putting a name to three common thought-based fear patterns keeping many of us stuck in self-doubt. Once something has a name, we can recognize it. And once we can recognize it, we have a choice. Instead of automatically believing every thought, you can become curious. You can ask, "is this fear talking?" And ultimately, "is this the voice within me I can trust?" Remember that your conscious adult won't leave you in fear, shame, rejection, or abandonment. It will remind you that you're capable, that no matter what comes your way, you will face it together. Awareness is the beginning of change. Our thoughts may not stop, and fear may still have something to say. The difference is it doesn't have to make every decision. Ep. 60: How to Start Rewriting the Story of You

The last few weeks, we’ve been talking about the ways our thoughts create our reality. Most of us rarely slow down to question our thoughts, meaning we’re internalizing them as truths without realizing it. Over time, those thoughts start to impact the ways we show up in our lives and relationships. Not because they’re true or accurate, but because we believe them.  This episode, I’m introducing you to an app called The Work by Byron Katie. This app is the best tool I’ve found to create a pause between you and your thoughts, what you're believing, and the story you're telling yourself. And not only what you're believing, but what those beliefs are creating physically in your body from an emotional perspective.  The goal with Byron Katie's work is to notice the stories we’re telling ourselves. We want to create an ability to pause, and then we want to get curious about whether or not it’s useful, beneficial, kind, or loving to continue believing that thought or story. Ep. 59: The Three Lies of the Ego

As I was reflecting back on last week's episode with Mike Morris, I was reminded of something called the three lies of the ego: I am what I have, I am what I do, I am what other people say I am. These thoughts are often running so unconsciously that we don't even realize we're believing them. They sound true and they feel true, and over time they can quietly influence how we see ourselves and the world.  This episode, I’ll walk you through each of the three lies of the ego and invite you to notice where they may show up in your life. Once you’re able to differentiate between somebody else’s experience of you and your experience of you, you can start to answer the existential question of “Who am I?” Not what you’ve accomplished, not who you are in relation to others, not who people think you are, but who you are at your core outside of everything else.  What you have changes, what you do changes, and what people think changes. Life changes, but character travels with us. Values travel with us. Integrity travels with us. Ep. 58: Letting Go of the Story Our Ego Is Telling Us with Michael Morris

There are people who enter your life and help you solve problems, and then there are people who fundamentally change the way you see yourself and the world. My guest this episode, Mike Morris, has been one of those people for me. Mike entered my life as my therapist, but he became so much more than that. He held space for me that I had never experienced before, and it fundamentally changed my life.  As a therapist with more than 40 years of clinical experience, Mike has helped countless people navigate anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, illness, divorce, and loss. Mike has a profound way of helping people loosen their grip on suffering and return to what is real, meaningful, and alive within themselves.  Mike feels like the spiritual dad I always needed in this life, not because he rescued me or fixed me, but because he saw me. He challenged me, believed in me, and helped me see myself more clearly. Through that relationship, I learned something that has become foundational to the work that I do today: that healing happens in safe relationships.  If you've ever listened to me talk about healing, acceptance, suffering, or what it means to feel fully human, there's a good chance those seeds were planted by Mike Morris.
