Ep. 2736 Erminia D'Angelo on Aglianico del Vulture, Volcanic Terroir & Basilicata's Wine Heritage | Wine, Food & Travel with Marc Millon

Welcome to episode 2736 of the Italian Wine Podcast and episode 252 of Wine, Food & Travel with Marc Millon. In this episode, Marc is in conversation with Erminia D'Angelo, fourth-generation winemaker at Casa Vinicola D'Angelo in Basilicata. They discuss the winery's pioneering role as one of the first to export Aglianico del Vulture beyond Italy, the influence of the volcanic terroir and old vines (some up to 80 years old), and the unique characteristics of harvesting Aglianico on Mount Vulture. The conversation also highlights the estate's flagship wines, Basilicata's rich gastronomic traditions, and classic local pairings, including the iconic peperone crusco. More about today’s guest: Erminia D'Angelo, along with her brother Rocco, represents the fourth generation of D'Angelo, one of the historical wineries in the heart of Vulture in Basilicata, always involved in producing Aglianico del Vulture. The winery was born in 1920. The family history goes hand in hand with the success of Aglianico del Vulture, which has become a symbol of Basilicata. She grew up playing between barrels and barriques, and her passion for this world grew with her. After earning a degree in Economics and Business Management—specializing in Corporate Finance—at LUISS , she immediately returned to the family business to work alongside her brother Rocco, the winemaker, following the premature death of their father, Lucio, in 2007—from whom she inherited her passion for the world of wine. She always travels the world to promote her wines.
