My Tech Story Africa
On this episode of "After Hours, in partnership with Tanqueray Africa," we speak with Chisom Anoke, a mobility leader at Yango, about what it actually takes to build a transportation business across a continent where the infrastructure, the regulation, and the customer are all still catching up to the smartphone. Mobility in Africa looks like a race between global giants such as Uber and Bolt for market share. However, Chisom argues the real race is happening somewhere else entirely , it's in outdated laws still governing roads built for a different era, in a customer base that has to be taught a service exists before it can be sold to them, and in market metrics that lie to you the moment you read them at a national level instead of a city one. Nigeria's GDP per capita says one thing. Lagos says another. Botswana and Namibia look unwinnable on paper and outperform in practice. In this conversation, Chisom talks about why Yango doesn't compete with the taxi companies already operating in a market, but licenses its technology to them instead, turning thousands of individual drivers into a handful of manageable partnerships. He gets into the unit economics most riders never think about: how two cents saved per kilometer compounds into a driver's ability to actually make a living, how fleet renewal financing changes the math on a 15-year-old car, and why Yango backed an EV push that's put electric boda bodas across Kigali's streets. He breaks down the tension boiling over between drivers and platforms across the continent right now, what "fair" driver earnings actually require behind the scenes to hold true, and the belief driving his own career: that the goal was never to help African markets catch up to somebody else's mobility story, but to help them build their own , the way M-Pesa didn't wait for a Western equivalent to exist first.
