Somewhere in a Goodwill right now sits something you once believed would make you happy. We buy, we hope, we donate, we repeat. Exodus tells the story of the strangest ending any treasured object ever got: Moses grinds the golden calf to powder, scatters it on the water, and makes the people drink it. Gold is harmless when swallowed — but it doesn't stay hidden. In the end, the idol is revealed for what it always was. This reflection is about the mercy buried in that strange moment: sometimes God lets our idols be exposed as waste so we can finally stop drinking them.

Here's what many get wrong about the golden calf: Israel wasn't leaving Yahweh. Look closely and Aaron announces a festival to the LORD, the personal, covenant name of God, right in front of the statue. They kept the right name and the right rescue story. They just poured him into a shape they could see, predict, and carry. This reflection is about the oldest form of idolatry, and the most common one: not trading God for a different god, but shrinking him down to something we can manage.

Nobody has ever mistaken a tent for a cathedral. So it's worth noticing that when God gave his people their first instructions for a place of worship, he didn't ask for stone, spires, or permanence. He asked for a tent: something with pegs and poles, built to be packed up and carried.
