Repertoire Radio Theatre
In the summer of 1938, at the height of radio’s golden age, Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre company brought a chilling new life to Dracula—not as a distant Gothic tale, but as an immediate, intimate confession delivered straight into the listener’s ear. This adaptation transforms Stoker’s sprawling epistolary novel into a taut, first-person narrative of dread, where journal entries, telegrams, and eyewitness testimony weave together a terrifying truth: evil does not merely haunt—it travels, it adapts, and it arrives uninvited. From the shadowed passes of Transylvania to the quiet shores of Whitby and the uneasy streets of England, the story follows those who come face to face with the mysterious Count Dracula—a figure at once aristocratic and monstrous, bound by ancient laws yet driven by an insatiable hunger. What makes this telling so enduring is not just its horror, but its humanity. These are ordinary people—doctors, lovers, skeptics—forced to confront the unimaginable. And in doing so, they must choose between reason and belief, safety and sacrifice. In this Repertoire Radio Theatre production, we return to that original spirit of storytelling—where sound conjures shadows, and the unseen becomes far more terrifying than anything visible. Close your eyes… and listen carefully. Because once invited in, Dracula is not so easily dismissed. This Repertoire Radio Theatre production features the vocal talents of John Cooper as Dracula, Vic Caroli as Van Helsing, Christian Conn as Harker, David Whalley as Seward , Pamela Dollak as Lucy, Pamela Austin as Mina and Michael Troop as the captain, mate and hand.
