Two dads on Father's Day, being present, and what their own fathers did right and wrong. This one lands on Father's Day weekend, and it happens to be a birthday in the house too, one kid turning 27 and another just past 30. So the question on the table is simple: what did dad do right? Answers come fast. Being present, and learning by example. A dad who traveled for work but had the flexibility to be at every single game, and a work ethic that started with washing the car every week as a kid and never left. The other side of the table is a different kind of dad. A flower shop, 70 hours a week on his feet, elaborate arrangements built by a gifted artist who could never quite duplicate himself enough to step back from it. From there it gets into the parts you can't really measure: the short fuse that quietly steals your fun, the $500 volleyball bill that "better be gold," whether you push a kid out at 18 or let them stay a while, and the thin line between being your kid's friend and still being their parent. FAQs 1. What's the difference between being present and being engaged? Being there is great, but engaged means your kids actually feel they can come talk to you. 2. Is it okay to miss some of your kid's events? A regular season game you can probably miss, but if they break their leg everything stops and you redirect. 3. How do you raise kids without being too soft or too strict? You stay firm and keep an open door, because kids enabled for too long hit a lot of trial and error later down the line. 4. What if your own dad wasn't around growing up? You're still in control of your own destiny, so you take the lesson, good or bad, and decide what you'll do differently. 5. How do you stop little things from stealing time with family? You let it roll off like water off a duck's back, because the guy who cut you off doesn't get to run your day.
