The True Discourse by Celsus is one of the earliest and most significant surviving critiques of Christianity from the ancient world. Written in the 2nd century CE, Celsus presents a philosophical and historical challenge to the emerging Christian movement, questioning its teachings, origins, and place within the Greco-Roman world. Although the original work has been lost, much of it survives through extensive quotations preserved in Origen's Contra Celsum, allowing modern readers to reconstruct one of antiquity's most influential debates between pagan philosophy and early Christianity. Writing from the perspective of a Platonist philosopher, Celsus examines Christian claims about Jesus, miracles, prophecy, resurrection, and divine revelation, while defending the traditions of Greek philosophy, classical religion, and the political unity of the Roman Empire. More than a religious controversy, The True Discourse provides a remarkable window into the intellectual and cultural world of the Roman Empire, revealing how competing philosophical and religious traditions confronted one another during Christianity's formative centuries. This work remains an essential source for the study of ancient philosophy, early Christian history, comparative religion, and the history of ideas.
