1. Sarah died in the land of Canaan and Abraham came to mourn and weep for her presumably from Beersheba where he dwelt–Gen. 23:1-2; 22:19. 1. In seeking for property to bury his wife, Abraham described himself as a stranger and sojourner–Gen. 23:3-4. 1. This is the same type attitude we had seen much earlier and one that we should embrace for ourselves–Heb. 11:13; 1 Pet. 2:11. 2. Abraham bought the field which belonged to Ephron in Machpelah which became the burial place for Sarah, his wife–Gen. 23:12-16. 3. This became the burial place for Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, Leah and Jacob–Gen. 23:17-19; 25:8-10; 49:30-31; 50:12-13. 1. Isaac is a type of Jesus Christ and therefore Gen. 21 foreshadows His birth while Gen 22 foreshadows His death, burial, resurrection and ascension. Sarah is a type of the nation of Israel which is significant in God’s plans and purposes for Man–Ps 147:19-20; Num. 23:9 1. Israel is God’s son, His firstborn–Ex. 4:22. 2. Israel is God’s wife–Jer. 3:8, 14. 3. Israel is God’s special treasure–Ex. 19:5; Deut. 7:2; 14:2. 4. Israel is the apple (lit. pupil) of God’s eye–Zech. 2:8. 5. Israel is God’s people–1 Kin. 6:11, 13. 1. The promise made by the Lord to Abraham concerned his descendants, the nation of Israel hence the reason the Lord delivered them from Egyptian oppression–Gen. 22:17-18; Ex. 3:7-8; 6:2-9. 1. Despite this clarity of PURPOSE regarding their journey, the nation of Israel disobeyed the Lord, choosing the path of unfaithfulness instead, whose consequences were devastating for them–Num. 14:11, 20-23; Judges 2:11-15; Ps 106:28-29, 34-36, 39, 43. 2. As a result of their cycle of disobedience, the nation of Israel DID NOT enjoy the fullness of the Lord’s Promise to Abraham, culminating in their captivity, in fulfilment of God’s Word–Deut. 28:15, 22, 41. 3. The Assyrian and Babylonian Captivities took place in 722 BC and 605 BC respectively–2 Kin 18:11-12; Jer. 20:4, 25:1-14. 4. However, despite the nation’s rebellion, the earthly realm of the kingdom has been covenanted to them–Ezek. 37:24. 5. The Lord will yet-future restore Israel to her rightful position–Jer. 30:1-3. 1. The New Testament opens with the heavenly realm on offer STRICTLY to the nation of Israel, the physical descendants of Abraham, a redeemed people. 1. John the Baptist preached this message to the nation of Israel ALONE–Matt. 3:1-2. 2. Jesus Christ preached this message to the nation of Israel ALONE–Matt. 4:12-13, 17. 3. Jesus Christ was sent to the nation of Israel ALONE–Matt. 15:24. 4. Jesus Christ sent His disciples to preach this message to the nation of Israel ALONE–Matt. 10:5-7.
